You may have never even given a second thought to your watch crystal. You look at it dozens of times a day, but it’s a really important component of a watch.

A crystal glass front keeps dirt out of your watch, but it also enables you to read the time clearly.

Friction often holds the crystal glass on a watch in place. The parts involved in the process are the crystal, the crystal seal (gasket), and the case itself.

The friction process ensures two things. First, it makes sure the crystal sits in place. Secondly, it prevents dirt and water from entering.

What is Sapphire Crystal?

When it comes to watch crystal, sapphire crystal is the “Gold Standard”. Harder than mineral, acrylic, and Hesalite, it is one of the hardest materials in the world. The super tough ceramic is colorless and crisp, achieving a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale.

Many of the very best watches feature a sapphire crystal glass front, and there are various styles to choose from. There are flat crystals, domed, double-domed crystals, and box crystals, to name a few.

One thing you should note, however, is the difference between sapphire glass and sapphire crystal glass.

Sometimes, an anti-scratch coasting appears on a mineral glass front. This “sapphire glass” is very different from sapphire crystal glass. Manufacturers often treat sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coatings.

This prevents any undesirable glare from affecting your view of the dial. It’s yet another desirable feature to have in a watch.

What Is a Domed Crystal?

So, what is a domed crystal? The single domed crystal is usually flat on the underside and domed on top. The shape of the glass can often distort the view of the dial but in a good way.

It magnifies elements of the dial and the general view of the watch face. The magnifying feature does have its. The glass must have a low curvature to achieve just the right balance.

Double-domed glass is a particularly popular feature in a high-end luxury watch. This means that the inside of the crystal is domed too (not just the outside). This feature can offer some real benefits.

The key to the double dome design is that its thickness remains the same across the entire curvature of the glass.

It results in a wide viewing angle, opening up the dial to enhance clarity and legibility. Because of its enhanced translucency, the double-domed sapphire crystal is widely appealing to collectors.

FAQs

To help you understand the appeal of the domed crystal watch further, let’s take a look at these FAQs.

What Is the Purpose of a Domed Watch Crystal?

The domed crystal watch is stronger than its flat counterpart. Domed crystal, although the same thickness, spreads over the force of a greater area. This structure makes it less likely to shatter under pressure or impact.

What Is the Difference Between Domed and Double-Domed Crystals?

Double-domed crystals have a more pronounced dome shape since they curve both on the underside and the top. Single-domed watches are less obvious in their curvature. Many high-end timepieces have double-domed crystal glass fronts.

How Do You Measure a Domed Crystal Watch?

To measure a domed crystal watch for replacement, you simply measure the inside of the bezel. Without getting too technical, however, if you’re unsure, get a watch repair technician to measure it for you.

Will You Choose a Domed Crystal Watch?

So, there you have it — the domed crystal watch explained. If you’ve been collecting watches for some time, you will likely have experienced its benefits without knowing.

Perhaps now you’ve learned more about the domed crystal watch, you’ll have a new-found appreciation for it in the future.
