The Best Citizen Eco-Drive Watches for Men: 15 Top Options

By Karlton Miko Tyack Updated December 10, 2024

Are you looking to learn more about men’s Citizen Eco-Drive watches? You’re in the right place. And I’ve got 15 options for your consideration.

Source: CITIZEN

Citizen is known for adopting progressive electronic technologies to its range. For example, its radio-controlled watches sync to advanced atomic clocks for optimum accuracy. What it’s arguably most known for, though, is its popular Eco-Drive movements.

Citizen Eco-Drive watches for men are some of the market’s most popular. Powered by light, these remarkable timepieces are convenient, reliable, and available at a range of prices.

Unlike other brands that save their best technologies for their advanced lines, Citizen is downright philanthropic with this solar tech.

If you’re looking for a good, honest timekeeper, the 15 are excellent options.

But first, let’s learn about Citizen Eco-Drive technology so you know exactly why they’re so great.

Eco-Drive Technology

There are many solar watches on the market. A men’s Citizen Eco-Drive watch special is particularly remarkable, though.

It is powered by any light source and stores the converted light energy in a rechargeable power cell. This allows for a constant cycling of light to energy that eliminates the need for battery replacement.

Once fully charged, it can run for over a year. Yes, even if the fully charged timepiece in question is stored away and kept away from any light.

Naturally, a clear sunny day charges the watch best. However, artificial light and cloudy days will also work.

And, of course, the technology has evolved over time.

Citizen Eco-Drive Watch For Men: An Evolution

Originally, the solar panel would sit on top of the watch dial. Then, Citizen created translucent dials that were less distracting and allowed for more clarity. Then, the Eco-Drive ring was invented.

This flexible ring sits around the edge of the dial, between the dial and the crystal. It’s the mechanism that takes in light and turns it into electric energy in the lithium-ion cell.

Since it’s on the outskirts of the watch face, it’s not in the way. And since it’s not in the way, the dial can be perfectly opaque. This allows for a wider range of designs, which Citizen certainly takes advantage of.

Citizen Men’s Eco-Drive watches come in all shapes and sizes.

Citizen Eco Drive Chandler Field Watch 2

The Citizen Eco-Drive One subline is an excellent example and one that all of us slender-wristed gents should know about.

They’ve managed to create the thinnest, smallest Eco-Drive movement. I’m talking a good one millimeter here. Because of this, their Eco-Drive One timepieces can be as thin as 2.98 millimeters.

Not only is this great for thin wrists, but in my opinion, it provides a sleek and elegant look.

So many other brands reserve their advanced technologies for their higher-end models. Citizen, on the other hand, is far more courteous. There are many budget, well-built brands powered by Eco-Drive movements.

They even combine their other technologies and high-end constructions with Eco-Drive movements. You can find Citizen Eco-Drive titanium models, Citizen Eco-Drive radio-controlled timepieces, and so much more.

Here they are, men’s Eco-Drive watches,  in no particular order!

Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Diver BN0191-55L

The BN0191-55L is a quintessential Citizen Eco-Drive men’s watch. From the crisp bezel to its solid build, it’s a fully ratified classic dive. It’s a great, albeit large, everyday watch.

Citizen BN0191-55L

However, it’s not a boring standard by any means. The sharp lugs, short and beautifully designed crown, and the stylish track that runs around the indices are unique.

  • Dimensions: 45mm diameter, 12mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 200m

That track also makes the indices easier to read.

Citizen Promaster Diver EP6051-14L

The EP6051-14L is actually the women’s version of the classic sort of tuna can diver.

Citizen Promaster Diver EP6051-14L

It has a robust bezel, a thick look, and non-flushed edges of the bezel insert. You can go for the men’s version if you want, but it’s a monstrous 44 millimeters.

  • Dimensions: 34mm diameter, 11mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 200m

This model provides the brawny look without the brawny wear.

Citizen Classic AW1232-04A

The AW1232-04A is the dress watch for men who don’t like dress watches (aka me).

Citizen AW1232-04A

It has dressy features, like the Roman indices and silky sunray dial. They are tempered by the outer racetrack, stick-forward font, and overall subtlety of the details.

  • Dimensions: 40mm diameter, 9mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 30m

Brilliant particulars, as always.

Citizen Axiom AU1062-56E

Move over, Movado — the AU1062-56E sports artistic, non-Scandinavian minimalism for those who love clean but not necessarily Nordic styles.

Citizen Axiom AU1062-56E

The slim bezel applied 12 markers, and the smooth polished bezel doesn’t lend itself to practicality.

  • Dimensions: 40mm diameter, 8mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 30m

However, this abstract look is highly versatile and understatedly fashion-forward.

Citizen Eco-Drive BM8240-03E

The Citizen Eco-Drive BM8240-03E is a chic everyday watch that can travel through dress codes like no other.

Citizen Eco-Drive BM8240-03E

Despite its adaptable and minimal design, this watch is oozing with details.

  • Dimensions: 36mm diameter, 8mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 30m

The 12, 8, and 4 indices create a triangulated design, while the brushing and center track provide looks and legibility.

Citizen Eco-Drive One AR5050-51L

With its exposed screws and graceful lines, the AR5050-51L has the luxurious yet industrial look of an AP Royal Oak.

Citizen Eco-Drive One AR5050-51L

It has an overall smooth design that would make an effective and conveniently versatile everyday timekeeper.

  • Dimensions: 39mm diameter, 2.98mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 30m

And being part of the Eco-Drive One subline, the case is less than 3 millimeters thick. Truly, anyone at any wrist size can comfortably sport this model.

Citizen Eco-Drive WR100

With 100 meters of water resistance, you can take these models basically anywhere — even though they aren’t all dives.

Citizen Weekender Two-Tone AW1146-55H

The AW1146-55H has several unique qualities, from its two-tone construction (the gold crown is a chef’s kiss) to the grill dial.

Citizen Weekender AW1146-55H

What does it for me, though, is the date window wheel.

This guy has a lot of personality but can be worn with a wide range of dress codes.

  • Dimensions: 38.5mm diameter, 10.4mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 100m

It’s a Citizen Eco-Drive WR100 despite not being a sports watch.

Citizen Garrison Chandler BM8180-03E

The BM8180-03E is a timeless, honest, and reliable field watch.

Citizen Garrison Chandler BM8180-03E

It suits a wide range of personal styles and flaunts that Citizen-esque pseudo-industrial look.

  • Dimensions: 37mm diameter, 9.5mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 100m

We deep dive into this model in our hands-on review. Spoiler alert: You can’t go wrong with this watch.

Citizen Avion BM7550-01E

I love a watch that looks like the radar panel of the vehicle you’re supposed to wear it on.

Citizen Avion BM7550-01E

The BM7550-01E sports all three hands plus a cardinal cross, which is there for the compass bezel. Between that and its grippy multi-story crown, this watch is made for adventurers.

  • Dimensions: 43mm diameter, 12mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 100m

There’s a lot going on here, but in an efficient, non-maximalist way.

Citizen Avion AW1361-10H

The AW1361-10H combines elegance with sportiness.

Citizen Avion AW1361-10H

The dial features a multi-track pilot design with fun pops of orange and tan.

  • Dimensions: 45mm diameter, 12mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 100m

You can read this dial from any angle. Meanwhile, the onion crown and exceptional brushing on the bezel are downright classy.

Citizen Weekender AW1158-05L

If you love textures and bold colors, the sporty AW1158-05L is for you.

Citizen Weekender AW1158-05L

The perforated dial matches the blue rubber strap. Beyond that, the structured strap matches the dynamic, multi-surfaced structure of the case.

  • Dimensions: 44mm diameter, 11mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 100m

Even the crown has the case’s sandwiched blue aesthetic. That’s truly impressive attention to detail.

Citizen Classic AW0081-54L

The AW0081-54L is almost like the everyday watch version of the Weekender AW1158-05L.

Citizen Classic AW0081-54L

Both combine athletic and refined aesthetics, blue and silver, and flawless attention to detail.

  • Dimensions: 42mm diameter, 10mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 100m

The hard edges and line-forward outer dial allow you to wear it with a t-shirt. At the same time, the stately feuille hands and Roman 12 make it suit-appropriate.

Citizen Garrison Chronograph AT0200-05E

If you love the Chandler BM8180-03E but wish it were a chronograph, look no further than this AT0200-05E.

Citizen Garrison Chronograph AT0200-05E

Its fully lined outer track and huge Arabic indices make it a bolder aesthetic. But that’s what you need from a potential pilot watch, and I love a field-aviator hybrid.

  • Dimensions: 39mm diameter, 11mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 100m

The added pushers even bring an engaging dynamism and a cool, asymmetrical look.

Citizen Marine AW1821-89L

The AW1821-89L is the epitome of familiar yet so different.

Citizen Marine AW1821-89L

Its intriguing, uncanny look comes from the gem-like indices, elegant yet stout hour hand, and, of course, the marine blue coloring.

It has a preppy look that isn’t overly loud while retaining the classic dive template.

  • Dimensions: 36.8mm diameter, 9mm thickness
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Water resistance: 100m

This balance makes it one of the most unique Citizen offerings that can still be styled classically.

A Watch That’s Both Citizen Eco-Drive Titanium and Citizen Eco-Drive Radio Controlled

Here’s a special model that I particularly love.

Citizen Promaster AT6080-53L

The AT6080-53L is definitely a fun-looking watch but hardly a toy.

Citizen Promaster AT6080-53L

The navy and lime-toned green complement each other perfectly, as do the gnarled crown and clean-lined body. And that spade-tipped secondhand? There are so many cool factors.

  • Dimensions: 39mm diameter, 11.4mm thickness
  • Case Material: Titanium
  • Water resistance: 200m

Moreover, this watch is radio-controlled, meaning it syncs with atomic clocks, providing top-notch accuracy.

Conclusion: Functional and Eco-Conscious

Now you know that Citizen Eco-Drive watches for men come in a wide range of looks and price points!

By the way, since they decrease battery disposals, they’re great for the environment. In fact, in 2007, Eco-Drive avoided ten million battery disposals in North America alone.
