All of the lads in a long-term romance know how to do this. Then, walking through the door, before you can even put down your keys, there it is again – another familiar gripe. Some are fair, some feel recycled, others, make you wonder if you are the lead in a bad sitcom. The reality is, women have their best moments calling men out and men are freaking out and done with it. Let’s take a look at the most frequent gripes women give, and why they are like nails on a chalkboard.
“Why Don’t You Ever Ask How I’m Doing?”
This is a very basic one, but it goes deep. Women need to be acknowledged and attended to and they don’t like feeling neglected by not being checked on. It is easy to become so engrossed in the process of problem-solving or unwinding after work that men may overlook the simple question. The irony? A two-second “How was your day?” might put an end to this grievance. However, if it’s not said, it’s he not caring, and then it’s an argument, not just a missed line.
“I Have To Do Everything/Handle Everything…”
This one will definitely take you to the end of your rope. Women cite invisible work tasks such as booking an appointment with the dentist, planning meals, and remembering birthdays. But sometimes men simply don’t see it coming, and the grievance is like that of a sucker punch. It’s not about doing all of the chores, it’s about doing chores when one is expected. She feels suffocated when she hears “I’m the only grown up here.”
“You Always Try to Fix Things Instead of Listening”
Men tend to repair.Men take to fixing. It’s instinct. However, she doesn’t want blueprints when she vents about her job or her sister, she wants validation. When she hears quick solutions, she feels that you’re brushing her off. Which is why “Just listen” comes across as a punch in the face to any guy who thinks he’s helping out. Sometimes a nod and “That sounds rough” can do more than the smartest plan that you have.
“You’re Never Emotionally Present”
This one is a punch in the gut because most guys believe that they are here. She feels like she is living with a roommate, not a partner, when she checks out during more serious discussions or when she doesn’t open up. It’s not the big things that are the problem, it’s the little things. Express one true thought, acknowledge you are stressed or simply lean in. It is more than silence can be.
“Why Are You Always on Your Phone?”
The dining table is basically a space marked by scrolling which is basically relationship kryptonite. Women interpret it as “my phone is more interesting than you.” Men defend it as a decompression or a way to keep track. In either case, it is a sign of disconnection. Turn off the phone during meals or conversations, and you’ve won half the battle. This grievance will soon be forgotten when she knows you’re fully present for her.
“Stop Acting Like a Child”
There is nothing that can deflate a man more than this one. It typically involves cleaning up your socks, paying your bills that you missed, or reminding you of appointments she’s made. Men feel they’re being attacked while women feel like they’re parenting. The remedy is very easy: take care of your part, without being asked. Nobody wants to feel like they’re married to another teenager.
“You’re Only Nice When You Want Sex”
This one hurts because it challenges your intentions. She sees the affection when it is only present before bed. To her it seems like manipulation, to men it is just timing! It’s easy to fix. Give compliments, affection and attention without expecting anything in return. The complaint loses its teeth when she sees genuine effort.
“All You Think About Is Sex”
It is a cousin to the previous one, but harsher. Women utter these words when they think that intimacy only equals physical. Men are left frustrated that it makes them seem one-dimensional. The truth? Balance is key. If you give her the chance to get close to you outside of sex, she won’t need to throw this line every other week.
“You Never Help Around the House”
This was one of the very few things that lit the sky with fireworks. She walks in, and she sees the dishes are all stacked up and she feels abandoned. You say to yourself, “Well I work all day too.” Both sides have a point, but that doesn’t kill the complaint. That’s the key is consistency. Clean up the garbage or do chores without being told to do them and you’re not the irresponsible husband she complains about anymore!
“You Forgot Again?”
Forgetting birthdays, anniversaries, date nights—remove the pin from a grenade. For women, it is a sign of their second-class status. It’s merely because they’re busy, or perhaps they simply forget, yet this reason doesn’t do the trick. It’s so simple and easy – just use calendar reminders. In seconds I remember, but weeks of cold shoulders are needed to forget.
“You Never Plan Anything Romantic”
This one strikes when life falls into routine. She’s looking for effort, not grand gestures. Just a meal out, a surprise stroll, or even a Netflix session is all she asks for. The complaint is fatiguing because it causes us to feel inadequate and like you’re not doing enough. But the truth? Small, consistent gestures beat one big Valentine’s Day every year.
“You Always Think You’re Right”
Nobody wins here. This is something thrown away by women when men refuse to take responsibility and don’t even apologize or admit the wrong. Men justify it on the grounds of reason or evidence.Men rationalize it, or argue it on the basis of facts. The issue is that defensiveness is counter-productive to connection. Choose your fights, acknowledge minor issues and leave the ego at home. “You’re right, my bad.” at times does more for peace than a bulletproof argument.
“You Only Care About Your Hobbies”
Any sport, job, or game, whatever it is that you do, she’ll gripe if it’s more important than the relationship. As it seems to her, it is neglect. It’s passion or down time from your side. The reality is, balance is all. Come to her first; then get lost in your hobby with no sense of responsibility. This means she never has the feeling of it being a race against a football game.
“All Men Are the Same”
No lines are deeper cut. This one puts you together with all of the old-fashioned, cheaters and exes. Men don’t like it because it takes their personal uniqueness out of the equation. But, typically, it’s not literal faith, it’s said in frustration. The best move? Don’t take offense, don’t be defensive, and establish your case gradually that you are no “every other guy.
“You Never Appreciate Anything I Do”
Every guy has heard this final complaint before. Basically, she’s telling you that she feels invisible to you. Men usually miss the point and react by rattling off a whole checklist of everything they’ve done. It doesn’t take much. Just a simple “thanks” after dinner or a quick “nice job” for something small goes a long way. Appreciation works both ways. And if we’re being honest, everyone just wants to feel noticed.
