You meet someone who makes you feel electric at first. He texts back fast, laughs at your jokes, remembers small details about your day. Then something starts to feel off. You can’t pinpoint when it happened, but now you’re walking on eggshells, wondering if you said the wrong thing or if he’ll actually show up when he says he will. You tell yourself things will get better… they never do.

He keeps giving you reasons to stay that sound good enough in the moment. But late at night, when you’re lying there replaying conversations in your head, you know something’s wrong. Here are the signs that scream loud and clear that this guy treats you badly, and you need to walk away.

You’re Afraid of Starting Over Alone

You think about leaving him, then picture yourself eating dinner solo or scrolling through dating apps again. The thought makes your stomach drop. So you stay, even though he makes you feel worse than being alone ever could.

He knows you’re scared of starting from scratch (and yeah, he uses that). Every time you get close to the door, he throws out just enough affection to reel you back in. But fear never built anything worth keeping.

You’ve Sacrificed Parts of Who You Are to Make This Work

You used to love painting, going out with friends on weekends, wearing that red lipstick he said was “too much.” Now? You’ve tucked those things away because they “caused problems” or made him uncomfortable. You became smaller so he could stay the same size.

He never asked you outright to change… he made little comments here and there. “You’re going out again?” or “You spend a lot of time on that hobby.” Now you look in the mirror and barely recognize who’s staring back.

You’re the One Who Always Has to Repair What Breaks

Something goes wrong between you two, and guess who’s scrambling to fix it? You. Every single time. He can say something cruel, ignore you all weekend, or forget your birthday, and somehow you’re the one apologizing, smoothing things over, making excuses for him.

He sits back while you do all the emotional labor. You send the “Can we talk?” text. You’re the one suggesting solutions, buying the books, begging him to try couples therapy. Meanwhile, he’s perfectly fine letting everything stay broken.

He Says “I Love You” Only When He Wants Something

Those three words used to mean everything. Now they show up right before he asks for a favor, needs you to forgive him (again), or wants you to stop asking questions. “I love you, babe” lands right after he cancels plans or right before he asks to borrow money.

Watch when he says it. You’ll notice a pattern real quick. He pulls out the “love you” card when he’s about to disappoint you or when he needs you to forget what he did last week. Love shouldn’t be a bargaining chip.

Your Goals Don’t Matter to Him

You tell him about the promotion you’re chasing, the business you want to start, the degree you’re working toward… and he changes the subject. Or worse, he makes a joke that cuts you down to size. “That’s a lot of work for not much payoff, huh?”

He never asks how the interview went. He forgets you had that big presentation (the one you mentioned five times). When you accomplish something, he finds a way to minimize it or make it about himself. Your dreams deserve someone who actually cheers for them.

He Acts Like You’re Interchangeable With Anyone Else

He talks to you the same way he’d talk to anyone. There’s no special spark, no inside language, nothing that makes you feel like you’re his person. You could be any woman standing there, and the conversation would sound exactly the same.

He forgets details you’ve told him a hundred times. He mixes up stories you’ve shared with stories from his ex or his coworker. You’re starting to realize he sees you as a placeholder, someone filling a role until someone “better” comes along.

You Never Know If You’re Actually Together or Not

One day he’s calling you his girlfriend, the next he’s telling his friends you’re “hanging out” or “seeing where things go.” You exist in this weird limbo where you’re expected to act committed… but he gets to keep all his options open.

He won’t define the relationship, won’t make plans beyond next weekend, won’t talk about the future. But the second you pull back or mention talking to someone else? Then he’s all in (for about 48 hours, anyway).

He Refuses to Admit When He’s Wrong

You could catch him red-handed, with receipts and screenshots, and he’ll still find a way to flip it. He’ll blame you, say you’re “too sensitive,” claim you misunderstood, or insist you’re remembering things wrong. Saying “I was wrong” would physically hurt him, apparently.

Every argument ends with you exhausted and somehow apologizing for bringing it up. He twists words, moves goalposts, brings up old stuff to distract you. Accountability? He’s never heard of her.

He Zones Out Every Time You Try to Talk

You’re mid-sentence, telling him something important, and you watch his eyes glaze over. He’s scrolling on his phone, staring at the TV, or literally walking to another room while you’re still talking. You could say “I’m leaving you” and he’d respond with “Uh-huh, cool.”

He perks up when he has something to say, though. Suddenly he’s animated, making eye contact, expecting you to hang on every word. But when you need him to listen? He’s already checked out.

You Have to Fight for a Sliver of His Attention

Getting him to focus on you feels like pulling teeth. You have to practically beg him to put the phone down, turn off the game, or stop working for five minutes. Even when you’re sitting right next to him, he’s mentally a million miles away.

Date night means he shows up physically but spends half the time texting or checking scores. You’ve started wondering if he’d even notice if you got up and left mid-conversation (spoiler: he probably wouldn’t).

Every Time You Talk, You Walk Away Exhausted

Conversations with him drain every ounce of energy you have. You’re defending yourself, explaining your feelings for the hundredth time, or trying to get him to understand something basic. By the end, you need a nap and maybe a drink.

Healthy relationships don’t leave you feeling like you ran a marathon every time you have a conversation. You shouldn’t have to prepare yourself emotionally before bringing up something simple. But with him, every talk feels like going to war.

He Only Tries When You’re About to Walk Away

He can ignore you for weeks, treat you like you’re invisible, cancel plans five times in a row… then the second you’ve had enough, here he comes with flowers, promises, and “I’ll change, baby, I swear.” He pulls out all the stops when he senses you’re done.

Give it two weeks (maybe three). He’ll go right back to how he was before. This cycle repeats over and over. He coasts until you threaten to leave, then puts in just enough effort to keep you around a little longer.

He Puts You Down and Calls It Humor

He makes fun of your laugh, your interests, the way you pronounce certain words… then tells you to “relax, it’s a joke” when you don’t find it funny. He’s constantly taking little jabs disguised as teasing, chipping away at your confidence bit by bit.

Real partners lift you up. They don’t use humor as a weapon to make you feel small. His jokes leave you feeling worse about yourself? Call it what it is: cruelty with a punchline.

You Second-Guess Your Own Thoughts Because of Him

You used to trust your gut. Now you question everything because he’s convinced you that you’re “overreacting,” “being paranoid,” or “remembering things wrong.” You replay conversations a dozen times, wondering if maybe you are too sensitive or too demanding.

He’s rewritten reality so many times that you’ve lost confidence in your own perceptions. You catch yourself thinking, “Maybe I’m the problem…” even when you know deep down that what he did was messed up.

He’s Only Around When It Works for His Schedule

He’ll text you at 11 PM on a Tuesday (“wanna come over?”) but mysteriously disappears when you need him on Saturday afternoon. He squeezes you into the gaps of his life after work, between hangouts with friends, when he’s bored and has nothing better to do.

You’ve planned your whole week around seeing him, cleared your calendar, turned down other plans… and he cancels last minute or “forgets” you two had something scheduled. His time is precious. Yours? Apparently expendable.
