A survey by Pew revealed about 55% of Americans say that couples stay in unhappy marriages for longer than they should, and you would be more surprised to know 58% of women as compared to 52% of men strongly hold this opinion. This reflects a broader shift in how many modern women view unhappy marriages and the possibility of leaving them. Here are some reasons that may be playing a role in the modern divorce culture.
Modern Marriage Has Changed More Than We Realize
The dynamics, the societal expectations, the taboo around divorce, the financial dependence that shaped women’s marriages in the past have all shifted. Society does not label women who seek divorce as homebreakers which saves women from the criticism the older generation had to face. One major factor that has rendered the idea of divorce less scary for women is that many modern women are more financially independent than previous generations of women so they don’t stay in loveless marriage just for security.
Women Are Less Willing To Stay Unhappy
Women of the modern era are not willing to settle for less than what they deserve. They have high standards as they aren’t following any timelines, aren’t seeking financial safety as the only reason to marry or don’t settle till they find someone compatible. The emotional, financial and social independence of modern women allows them to choose themselves over staying and suffering in an unhappy marriage.
Why More Women Are Initiating Divorce
Women expect partnership and equal emotional labor in a marriage from a man. When a man fails to show up in ways that make the connection meaningful she doesn’t wait for him to change while covering his neglect towards her legitimate needs.
Emotional Neglect Is No Longer Being Brushed Aside
Emotions had little value in past marriages. Many unhappy marriages survived a lifetime where the man was the provider and the woman was assigned the traditional role of a homemaker. She accepted her fate and endured emotional unavailability, assuming a man’s financial responsibility was enough. Women now seek emotionally secure and intelligent men, if a man repeatedly dismisses, invalidates or downplays her emotions she simply walks out as to her emotional safety is essential for a happy marriage.
The Mental Load Can Become A Marriage Problem
When a woman has to manage the house, the children, all, house chores, all events, appointments and relationships the one-sided emotional labor eventually exhausts her. Resentment starts to build, and she may walk away wondering if she has to do it while being with someone. Why waste her energy when it’s not appreciated.
Financial Independence Changes The Divorce Equation
Past generations of oppressed and unhappy women stayed in unhappy or abusive marriages because they were entirely financially dependent on the men, modern women first establish emotional, and financial independence before they enter a marriage. This gives them the leverage to exit a relationship when it starts getting unbearable.
Women Expect Partnership, Not Just Provision
Women have careers, degrees and autonomy so marrying for money is not a priority. They see mental compatibility, emotional compatibility as the key relationship goals. They don’t just want a provider, they want a man who is emotionally mature, empathetic, respectful and trustworthy.
“We Live Like Roommates” Has Become A Common Complaint
Many women complain that after the initial excitement of the honeymoon phase settles many men may not even try maintaining a work life balance. They become too busy with careers, jobs or other responsibilities they let their marriage and partner take a back seat. This may make the marriage feel transactional where all they talk about are responsibilities and chores.
Communication Problems Can Become Deal Breakers
Many beautiful marriages fail not because they fall out of love but rather because they couldn’t learn how to respectfully and openly communicate to resolve issues and conflicts at hand. This keeps unresolved wounds piling up that ultimately cause the collapse of the marriage.
Infidelity Is Not The Only Form Of Betrayal
Women have a no nonsense attitude towards loyalty. The random flirting with workers and texting strangers may not matter to some men but women see emotional cheating as just as grave a mistake as physical cheating. If the pattern recurs despite her expressing her concern, she won’t feel afraid to pack her bags and walk out.
Women Are Questioning The Idea Of Staying “For The Kids”
Many women no longer believe that endless sacrifice for the sake of the children should require them to remain in an unhealthy marriage. But now as financially independent, strong women they take a strict measure or decision if something serious like cheating, physical abuse etc are involved.
Social Media Has Changed How People View Marriage
Social media influencers and celebrity couples have created high expectations of romance and unrealistic standards for a spouse for both men and women. Many women subconsciously accept that display of affection they see online as the norm and may wish to live a better life than what they currently have.
The Comparison Trap Makes Ordinary Marriages Feel Inadequate
A sad reality about comparison is that it turns a person blind to their own blessings. When the flashy display of wealth and romance, the destination wedding photos and videos, the influencer couple performing love and affection perfectly curated for their audience make their way to a woman who is already in an unhappy marriage she may feel even more terrible about her own marriage. Sometimes, even a fairly good marriage may start to feel inadequate to either or both partners when they bring unnecessary comparisons to seemingly happy couples.
Divorce Is Less Stigmatized Than It Once Was
Women were labelled as homebreakers for not being able to save their marriage in the olden days. The fear of judgment and criticism from society kept women tied to abusive and incompatible partners. Society has become more accepting of women rescuing themselves from toxic environments without questioning their womanhood.
Why Some Women Leave After Years Of Trying To Fix The Marriage
Most of the women even in unhappy marriages do not step out of desperation and impatience, they may make all efforts in their hands before they take the ultimate decision to quit the marriage when nothing seems to be working.
Is Modern Divorce Culture Ending Marriage Or Changing What People Expect From It?
Many of the cases where women walk out of abusive marriages may stem from reasons of seeking liberation from toxic environments to protect themselves, some cases do exist where the changing expectations or social media influence may be impacting how women perceive marriage. But whenever a marriage fails, there are rarely one-sided explanations that lead to the rupture of the connection. Dumping the entire blame on one gender would be unfair!
