Marriage throws two people together, and somewhere between picking out curtains and figuring out whose turn it is to take out the trash, you start calling the shots. Maybe you didn’t plan it that way. Maybe it happened so gradually that you woke up one day and realized he checks with you before making plans with his friends, asks if it’s okay to grab lunch with his coworkers, or waits for your approval before buying anything over twenty bucks. Read on to see if any of these sound familiar.

1. Embarrassing Him While Everyone’s Watching

You crack a joke at his expense during dinner with friends, and everyone laughs… except him. He forces a smile, but you saw that flicker of hurt before he buried it. You told everyone about the time he couldn’t figure out how to assemble the bookshelf, or how he got lost using GPS, or how he wore two different socks to a wedding once.

He won’t say anything right there at the table. He’ll wait until you’re in the car, or maybe he won’t bring it up at all. But he’ll remember. And next time you invite people over, he’ll be a little quieter, a little less willing to share stories or jump into conversations. You’ve taught him that opening up in front of others means risking becoming your punchline.

2. Finding Ways to Just Argue About Nothing

He mentions he might grab coffee with his brother tomorrow, and somehow you’ve turned it into a fight about how he never asks about your day first. He says he’s tired, and you fire back with “oh, so I’m not tired?” He picks the wrong brand of yogurt at the store, and you spend fifteen minutes explaining why that was inconsiderate.

You’re not even mad about the yogurt (or the coffee, or any of it, really). You’re picking fights because something else is bothering you, or because you’re testing him, or because arguing has become the default setting. He learns to tiptoe through conversations, weighing every word before he says it. Eventually, he stops saying much at all.

3. Guilt-Tripping Him Every Chance You Get

He wants to play basketball on Saturday morning, and you sigh. “I guess I’ll do the grocery shopping by myself again.” He bought himself new running shoes, and you mention how long it’s been since you got anything for yourself. He stayed late at work on Tuesday, so you remind him (on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) that you had to handle bedtime alone.

You’ve turned his choices into debts he owes you. He can’t do anything without hearing about what you sacrificed, what you gave up, what you’re stuck handling while he’s off “doing whatever he wants.” He starts declining invitations, skipping hobbies, staying home, and resenting you for it. You didn’t forbid him from going. You made sure it cost him enough that he stopped trying.

4. Digging Up Old Fights to Prove You’re Right

He forgot to text you he’d be late coming home from work, and you’re suddenly bringing up that time three years ago when he forgot your anniversary dinner reservation. You’re arguing about who’s supposed to take the trash out, and you’re listing every chore he’s ever forgotten since 2019. He says he’ll try harder, and you respond with “you said that last time, and the time before that, and…”

You keep receipts on everything he’s ever done wrong, filed away and ready to deploy whenever you need ammunition. He can’t address what’s happening now because you keep dragging him back to what happened then. He apologizes, he makes changes, but you won’t let him move forward. You’ve built a museum of his mistakes, and you give him a tour every time he steps out of line.

5. Talking Down on Him in a Condescending Manner

He asks how to work the new coffee maker, and you say “it’s not that hard” in a voice you’d use with a toddler. He suggests a different route to avoid traffic, and you explain (very slowly, very clearly) why your way is better. He shares an idea about redecorating the living room, and you pat his hand and say “that’s sweet, but let me handle it.”

You’ve assigned yourself the role of the competent one, which means he’s playing the fool. He hears it in your voice every time he speaks up, that edge of exasperation, that “bless your heart” energy. He stops offering suggestions. He stops asking questions. He lets you take charge of everything because you’ve made it clear you think he can’t handle it anyway.

6. Making Decisions That He Doesn’t Even Approve Of

You signed the kids up for soccer without mentioning it to him first. You booked a vacation for dates he already said wouldn’t work. You told your in-laws they could stay with you next month, even though he specifically asked you to check with him before committing to hosting. You bought a new couch, repainted the bedroom, or adopted a dog, and he found out after the fact.

“I thought you’d be fine with it,” you say when he brings it up. Or “we needed to make a decision quickly” or “you’re never around to discuss these things anyway.” You’ve decided that running things by him is optional, a courtesy you extend when you feel like it. He’s married to you, shares a life with you, but you’re making that life without his input. He’s a passenger in his own home.

7. Refusing to Be Intimate With Him Unless He Does What You Say

He wants to be close, and you turn away. “Maybe if you’d helped with the dishes earlier…” or “I’m not in the mood when you’ve been on your phone all evening” or “you expect me to want you after you forgot to pick up milk?” You’ve linked physical closeness to compliance, turned it into something he earns by meeting your conditions.

He feels it every time he reaches for you and you pull back. He knows what’s coming: the list of grievances, the explanation of why he doesn’t deserve affection right now. Intimacy isn’t about the two of you anymore. It’s a reward system, and you hold all the cards. He stops trying to initiate. He stops reaching out. You’ve trained him to associate wanting you with rejection and shame.

8. Belting Out Offensive Jokes Right in Front of Everybody

You mock his receding hairline at family gatherings. You make cracks about his salary in front of your friends. You tell people he’s “useless in the kitchen” or “can’t handle spicy food” or “cries during dog movies.” You frame it as teasing, as playful banter, but everyone laughs a little too hard and he smiles a little too tight.

He can’t defend himself without looking sensitive or “unable to take a joke.” You’ve put him in a position where he has to laugh along or look weak. He endures it, but he’s cataloging every comment, every joke at his expense. He’ll bring it up later, in private, and you’ll tell him he’s overreacting. He’ll stop believing you respect him.

9. You Never Take Accountability When You’re Wrong

You snapped at him this morning, and when he points it out, you explain why you were stressed instead of apologizing. You forgot to pay the electric bill, and when the late notice arrives, you mention how busy you’ve been instead of admitting you dropped the ball. You hurt his feelings, and instead of saying “I’m sorry,” you tell him why he shouldn’t be hurt.

He watches you deflect, justify, and redirect every time you mess up. “You made me react that way” or “I wouldn’t have said that if you hadn’t…” You’ve made it impossible for him to hold you accountable because you refuse to hold yourself accountable first. He stops bringing things up. He swallows his frustration. You’ve taught him that pointing out when you’re wrong will get him nowhere.

10. Constantly Comparing Him to Other Guys

“Sarah’s husband takes her on dates every week.” “Emily’s boyfriend surprised her with flowers.” “My coworker’s husband would never forget something like that.” You hold him up against every other man in your orbit, and he always comes up short. He could do ninety-nine things right, but you’re focused on the one thing Jake or Marcus or your friend’s new fiancé did better.

He hears you, and he knows he’ll never measure up. You’ve set a standard based on highlight reels and curated stories, and you expect him to compete with versions of men he doesn’t even know. He stops trying to impress you because impressing you means living up to fantasies. He shuts down, pulls back, and you wonder why he’s not “putting in effort anymore.”

11. You Always Point Out His Flaws, But Not the Stuff He Did Right

He fixed the leaky faucet, and you didn’t say anything. He remembered to pick up your prescription, and you moved on without acknowledging it. But when he forgot to take the trash out? You’re on it within seconds, listing all the times he’s forgotten before. He does ten things right, and you laser-focus on the one thing he missed.

You’ve created a space where doing well gets him silence, but messing up gets him a lecture. He’s learned that his efforts go unnoticed, that meeting expectations earns him nothing, but falling short earns him your full attention. He stops going the extra mile. Why bother when you won’t notice anyway?

12. Raising Your Voice When It’s Completely Unnecessary

He forgot to lock the back door, and you’re yelling like the house is on fire. He left his shoes in the hallway, and you’re snapping at him like he committed a crime. He asks a simple question, and you respond with volume and edge that doesn’t match the situation at all.

You’ve normalized shouting as your default response to minor inconveniences. He’s walking around bracing for the next explosion, never sure what small mistake will set you off. He doesn’t feel safe being imperfect around you. He tenses up when you speak, anticipates the volume spike, and starts avoiding conversations altogether. You’ve made home feel like a minefield.

13. You Refuse to Let Go of Issues That Were Resolved

He apologized for canceling plans last month. You both talked it through, agreed to move forward, and he thought it was done. But now you’re bringing it up again during an unrelated argument. You keep circling back to things he’s already apologized for, things you both supposedly moved past. He asks if you’ve forgiven him, and you say “yes, but…”

You’re holding onto resolved issues like insurance policies, pulling them out whenever you need leverage. He can’t move forward because you keep yanking him back to the past. He wonders if anything he does will ever be enough, if any apology will actually stick. He stops believing in resolution. Why work through something if you’re going to resurrect it next week?

14. He Always Needs Permission From You to Do Stuff

He asks if it’s okay to go to the gym. He checks before accepting a work dinner invitation. He runs it by you before buying a new pair of jeans or meeting up with his buddies for a beer. He’s a grown man, but he operates like he’s asking a parent for permission to go outside and play.

You didn’t explicitly ban him from doing things. You’ve created an environment where he needs your approval for everything. Maybe you got upset once when he made plans without consulting you, and now he triple-checks before committing to anything. He’s lost the ability to make decisions for himself because he’s too busy managing your reactions. You’ve turned him into someone who can’t move without your say-so.

15. Completely Ignoring His Feelings Because He’s a “Man”

He tells you he’s stressed, and you brush it off with “everyone’s stressed.” He mentions he’s hurt by something you said, and you tell him to toughen up or stop being so sensitive. He tries to express frustration, and you roll your eyes because “men don’t get to complain” or “you don’t know what real stress is.”

You’ve decided that his gender disqualifies him from having valid emotions. You’ve gendered empathy, reserved understanding for yourself, and left him to deal with everything alone. He learns that sharing how he feels gets him dismissed or mocked. He shuts down emotionally, stops talking to you about anything real, and you eventually complain that he “never opens up.” You closed the door yourself.

16. Pretending That Everything Should Be 50/50 All the Time

He worked fifty hours this week, so you demand he split the housework exactly in half. He’s sick with the flu, but you’re counting chores to make sure he’s “pulling his weight.” He did the dishes and took out the trash, but you’re upset because you folded laundry and that means you did more. You’ve turned marriage into a ledger, tracking every contribution and keeping the score even.

Life doesn’t split neatly down the middle, and relationships can’t function like business transactions. Some weeks he’ll do more. Some weeks you’ll carry the load. But you’ve made flexibility impossible because you’re obsessed with equality in every moment, every task, every effort. He stops offering to help because helping turns into negotiating. You’ve drained the generosity out of giving.
