Have you ever made a decision which you instantly regretted? Perhaps agreeing to a dinner when you least wanted to go, signing up for a social responsibility you didn’t have the energy for, or agreeing to something before you learned that your days ahead are booked? Sometimes the difficulty is not in getting out of the commitment, it’s doing it in a way that doesn’t hurt your reliability, reputation or makes your absence seem like a fake excuse. The right excuse is credible, brief, and doesn’t make a bigger mess later. Here are 15 ways to gracefully get out of plans you no longer want to be a part of.

“Something Came Up That I Need To Deal With”

It’s not specific enough to overexplain yourself or reveal what truly came up, but it’s clear that your cancellation is not personal.

The best excuse is just to say you said yes too much, and found out once you got time that you already have something scheduled for that day or date.

“I’m Not Feeling Well Enough To Go”

When you’re really sick, you don’t have to give a list of symptoms, just inform them in a timely manner so you don’t inadvertently create inconvenience for them by cancelling at the last minute.

“I Need A Quiet Night”

When you’re feeling drained, and you don’t have the emotional or physical energy to take on another social commitment, this excuse can be surprisingly effective.

If you’re not feeling up to a late-night date, it’s a perfectly acceptable excuse to turn down the invitation without offending the person who invited you.

“I Need To Catch Up On Some Work”

If you’re really busy, it’s better to save your time, and focus on meeting for instance your project deadline than showing up half-heartedly and distracted.

“A Family Matter Came Up”

Family responsibilities can and in fact must take priority but don’t fabricate a complicated emergency that may make the other person question your credibility later.

“There’s Something I Forgot To Plan For”

It’s not perfect, but it’s easier to admit that you made a mistake than to make up a story. But inform them beforehand so you don’t end up hurting their feelings.

“I Need To Take Care Of Something At Home”

Sometimes, home duties are all you need to quote as an excuse, to prevent yourself from being dragged into unnecessary socialising or uncomfortable gatherings.

“I’m Really Burned Out Right Now”

It’s better to admit that you don’t have a social battery. Not feeling emotionally your best is a legitimate reason to stay home rather than to pretend you are physically sick.

“I Won’t Be Able To Give My Full Attention”

This works particularly well for professional or social commitments where simply showing up isn’t enough, and your full participation is expected.

“Can We Reschedule?”

If you really want to see the person later, it makes the cancellation seem less dismissive if you offer another time as per usual agreement.

“I Don’t Think I Can Commit To This Right Now”

This is the truthful choice if your schedule ahead was already full, you certainly don’t have to commit.

“I Said Yes Too Quickly”

It’s actually quite a great way to reclaim your boundaries, by admitting that you had made a rushed decision, particularly if you’re trying to break your chronic people-pleasing habit.

Sometimes You Don’t Need An Excuse At All

The best thing to learn is that you don’t have to create a crisis just because you’ve changed your mind.

Final Thoughts

It doesn’t take a big lie to get out of a commitment. The more details you offer, the more you will fuel suspicion later. A simple “I can’t make it this time, but I’d love to catch up another day” can often accomplish more than a complicated story. The true skill is not getting better at making excuses. It’s to learn to set boundaries and say no without feeling bad about it or hurting someone.
