Surviving a life with a partner with narcissistic tendencies is not an easy feat. You feel everything is okay, in fact perfect, one day, and the very next day you’re doubting your entire relationship. This is the trap that may keep you too confused to quit the relationship as every time you do make up your mind, your narcissistic partner pulls you back with love bombing.

Here are 13 ways to tell your partner may have narcissistic tendencies

You Constantly Question Your Own Reality

You have started to question your own reality, you keep wondering if you are the problem? Am I being ungrateful? Am I being unfair? Is everything your mistake? This is how a partner with narcissistic tendencies keeps you in self-doubt.

Everything Somehow Becomes Your Fault

Gaslighting, that is, labelling your reaction to their repeated provocation as the main problem, is a pattern you will notice in your relationship. You are somehow the reason all problems in the relationship exist.

Their Apologies Never Lead To Change

When things hit rock bottom and they see you are reaching your breaking point and may even walk out. They start offering empty apologies. Their apologies may restore temporary peace without leading to meaningful, lasting change.

You Walk On Eggshells Around Them

The volume of your words, your tone, your mood, your habits, everything gets microanalysed and criticised. You may even receive threats if you go against their will. Your decision-making and judgment get clouded by the fear of their reaction. You are always anxious.

Your Feelings Are Always “Too Much”

You are simply too much for them. They may rarely compliment the good parts of you but would be the first to correct or criticise you. Your emotional needs, your legitimate feelings, etc., are all just too dramatic. Your desire for attention gets you tagged as too clingy or needy.

They Need To Be In Control

They set the ground rules of the relationship. You dare to challenge them by exercising your own autonomy and you are doomed. They may never value your commitments, time, energy, choices, friendships or boundaries but expect you to hold theirs supreme.

They Twist Your Vulnerability Against You

You may open up to them in a weak moment and they may use your fears, insecurities and vulnerabilities against you in every conflict to manipulate you or make you feel small. Their ego is fed by minimising you.

They Want Your Attention But Rarely Reciprocate

They get upset when you prefer your friendships or commitments. They want themselves to be the centre of your attention 24/7, your affection, time and reassurance must automatically belong just to them. But when you demand consideration and understanding? That becomes a point of conflict. So, you end up emotionally lonely while being in a relationship.

They Punish You For Setting Boundaries

Your boundaries receive little or no respect from them. They, in fact, get more angered and emotionally withdraw when you try to enforce your boundaries. They guilt-trip you into believing your boundaries are the reason for emotional distance and accuse you of not loving them enough.

You Miss Who You Were Before The Relationship

The saddest part of being trapped in a narcissistic dynamic is that little by little, their behavior may cause you to lose touch with your identity. In some years, you are barely recognisable to yourself. You mourn the loss of the version of you that existed before this relationship altered your sense of self-worth and joy.

They Alternate Between Affection And Cruelty

The hot-and-cold behavior involves them doting on you one day and withdrawing affection and warmth the next day. They may use emotionally manipulative tactics like silent treatment or stonewalling to punish you for refusing to comply with their demands, which has a lasting and extremely emotionally damaging impact on you. Your self-worth starts relying on their approval.

You Keep Waiting For Them To Become The Person You First Met

Another highlight of a relationship with a narcissistic partner is that you cling to the hope of having the charming version of the person they first showed themselves to be or wait for them to change. This wishful thinking and the episodes of love bombing may keep you stuck in the cycle forever.

Leaving Feels Harder Than Staying

Lastly, you may be well aware of all the signs in your relationship, but your self-confidence, self-growth, and self-esteem are at their lowest. You may want to leave but the guilt, attachment, confusion or hope of a positive change may keep you tethered to the flawed dynamic for longer than is healthy for your physical and mental health.

Final thoughts

If the repeated pattern of emotional harm continues and if things shift from simple threats to signs of physical harm, you must reconsider your decision to stay because staying would do more harm than good in the long run. For coping with emotional abuse, seeking individual support and safety planning may be more appropriate than couples counseling.
