Unhealthy and unfulfilling relationships aren’t always loud and obvious. They may appear normal on the outside more often than you think, but leave you feeling anxious, tired, or constantly questioning your self-worth. A single poor argument or conflict is not a sign of a toxic relationship, but a pattern of unhealthy behaviors and conflicts should be addressed.

You Feel Like You’re Walking On Eggshells

You walk on egg sheel around your partner. You have developed an irrational fear of doing everything wrong as you’re unsure how your partner will respond. Simple conversations can make you feel tense or worried about starting another fight.

They Constantly Criticize You

They deliberately and quite often make you feel bad about yourself instead of appreciating the good in you. Repeated criticism can erode your confidence and self-esteem over time.

You’re Always The One Apologizing

You always seem to be the one who takes the blame in arguments to establish momentary peace over long-term stability. When you are constantly apologizing for something you didn’t really do, the relationship sadly is unbalanced, in your disfavor.

They Exploit Your Weaknesses Against You

Your private conversations and vulnerabilities are used as tools to hurt, embarrass, or manipulate you in every new fight. Vulnerability can turn into ammunition, making it challenging to feel emotionally safe with your partner.

They Try To Control Your Social Life

They discourage your friendships, interfere with family relationships, or make you feel guilty for spending time away from him whenever you choose yourself. A healthy relationship should allow room for positive relationships beyond the relationship to both partners.

They Make You Question Your Reality

They twist narratives and make you doubt or question your own memory and account of events.
Memories can be disputed sometimes for real, but if instilling self-doubt in you is a recurring pattern, it can be very destabilizing for your long-term emotional well-being.

You Can’t Express Your Needs

Asking for reasonable affection, legitimate support, personal space, or basic respect makes you feel selfish or guilty. At some point, you might cease to communicate your needs just to prevent another fight.

Their Affection Feels Like A Reward

Warmth and attention seem to appear when you behave the way they want and disappear when you don’t. This can make their love feel conditional and even suffocating.

They Don’t Respect Your Boundaries

You state your boundaries clearly, but they keep violating them. If it’s privacy, communication, or personal space, repeated boundary violations should be taken seriously.

You Feel Drained Around Them

You feel unsupported and exhausted after spending time together, which is a consistent experience.  If their presence leaves you emotionally depleted, that is a problem worth considering.

You Hide Parts Of Yourself

You suppress your true self, your views, desires, friendships, or overall personality to prevent conflict. A relationship should not make you feel like you have to be a smaller version of yourself to appease the other person.

They Constantly Compare You To Others

They constantly make comparisons between you and others, whether it’s looks, skills, accomplishments, your life, or your actions. Over time, these comparisons can make you feel like you’re constantly competing for your partner’s approval.

All Disagreements Become Power Struggles

Conflict turns into a game of who is correct, instead of a chance to work out a problem together. Healthy couples can argue without it becoming a battle of control.

You Keep Making Excuses For Them

You always try to find a positive explanation for negative actions because you want to think there is a genuine reason behind their awful behavior. Knowing someone’s problems does not mean that you have to tolerate their repeated negative behavior.

You Feel Like You’ve Lost Yourself

You don’t  even remember the person you were before the relationship slowly took away your spark. As the relationship consumed your life, your priorities, confidence, friendships, or interests slowly faded away.

You Feel More Anxious Than Happy

You might find yourself waiting for the next argument or disappointment even during times of peace. If anxiety and chaos are always more prevalent than peace and happiness, it’s time to reconsider the relationship.

Final Thoughts

A poor relationship can have love, attraction, laughter, and good memories too. What makes it healthy is the consistent presence of unhealthy patterns of behavior and the feelings that surface from time to time. Don’t dismiss these feelings because the relationship is good at times, see the truth and have an honest conversation with your partner.
