You may love the way they seem so involved and concerned about your life, how they keep asking about your day-to-day updates. You may have begun to wonder if you mean the whole world to them? If they feel too good to be true, then maybe, you need to pause and reflect before you move towards a serious commitment. If your intuition warns you and you see these 15 signs that reek of a desire for control, validation or power then you need to reevaluate your relationship as a genuine connection is definitely not on their priority list.

They Need to Know Everything You Do

They may seem overtly engrossed in getting to know you better. They may ask you details about your life and emotional world to acquaint themselves with various aspects of your life so that monitoring you becomes easier in the future. Controlling people may disguise control as concern to trap their victims. Don’t ignore their patterns especially if they extract more personal information from you than they share about themselves.

They Treat Your Boundaries Like a Challenge

They can’t take no for an answer. Your time, energy, work, schedules everything comes secondary to theirs. They may expect you to reorganise your entire life and routine to suit their convenience. If your efforts at enforcing your boundaries anger them, they may be unreasonably expecting indefinite sacrifices from you while they get away with anything.

They Become Jealous When You Give Others Attention

You may feel it’s cute that they feel jealous when you talk about a friend or colleague or someone of the opposite gender talks to you. A little bit of protectiveness is fine, but when they become obsessed, this reveals deep-rooted insecurity which they guise as jealousy and care. In reality they want to be the center of our attention all the time.

They Want You to Prove Your Loyalty Constantly

True love doesn’t need 24/7 reassurance. If they constantly test your loyalty they may be insecure and have an extremely low self-worth. A partner who demands an immediate response, throws a fit when you fail to answer their call or gets upset when you don’t comply with what they ask, then they are simply seeking proof of your loyalty.

They Make You Feel Guilty for Having a Life Outside Them

They may want to curtail your autonomy and freedom. An overbearing partner ensures to isolate you from your social circle and connections and calls you selfish when you pursue your individual life, hobbies, ambitions, or goals outside the relationship. When you become dependent on them then they can exercise their power and control with your support system gone.

They Use Affection as a Reward

They have a hot and cold behavior. If they may find you compliant then may offer you all the warmth and affection, but the moment you disagree and try to reclaim your independence, they just lose it. They withhold affection, give you silent treatment etc to induce guilt in you. Affection and love should not be used as a weapon to hurt a partner.

They Punish You With Silence

While occasionally taking some time to cool off after a conflict or argument is healthy, it gets toxic when a partner with overbearing tendencies starts using punitive silence. They withdraw attention and love, till you apologise and they can get their way with things. They operate from ego, not a desire to repair.

They Turn Your Vulnerabilities Into Weapons

At first they act like your only well-wisher, they elicit all your personal information, deepest secrets, biggest fears and insecurities. Trusting them you may open up in a vulnerable moment only to regret it later when their mask falls and they show their true colors. They start using your vulnerabilities to tear you down in arguments.

They Always Need to Win the Argument

Their goal is to maintain an upper hand in all arguments. A healthy couple wants the relationship to win while a toxic partner may want to win at all costs even if it means losing you in this. They twist narratives, over-correct, repeat mistakes, and refuse to hold themselves accountable. Blame-games and accountability deflection help them get an advantage over you.

They Make You Question Your Own Reactions

A huge red flag is a partner who may never let you question their unreasonable behavior. They may label your reaction to their repeated provocation the problem. Tactfully shifting the entire focus from the issue to your legitimate reaction is what feeds a controlling partner’s ego.

They Keep Moving the Goalposts

They may demand endless compromises from you, to an extent if you enter a long-term relationship with such a partner you won’t be able to recognize your old self. In trying to appease them you may lose your identity and they would have a new set of expectations from you. You become totally drained trying to seek their approval which you may never get.

They Want to Decide What Is Best for You

They will instill self-doubt in you by criticizing you, belittling your opinions, correcting you and giving you unsolicited advice. Slowly you may start questioning your own judgment as they make you believe that you never know what’s right for you and only they know what is best for you. They strip you of your decision making ability little by little, and you keep wondering, maybe it’s their love and care.

They Become More Controlling When You Pull Away

You may notice how they start to panic the moment you try to pull away from them. The barrage of messages, accusations, frantic voice messages or apologies that may come your way when you try to disconnect are very telling of the fact that they may be more scared of losing their power than the connection. Their attempt for repair may be to regain control.

They Keep You Emotionally Off Balance

Keeping you confused works in their best interest. They may love-bomb you one day and act all distant the next day. This keeps you stuck in a loop where one day you feel everything is right and the very next day that sense of emotional safety is gone. While not every mood change may be manipulation but when unpredictability becomes a pattern then ignoring it is no longer an option.

They Care More About Having Influence Than Understanding You

The emotional uncertainty created by constantly misinterpreting or misunderstanding you is a deliberate act on their part. They have no intention of actually trying to understand you so they stir chaos every time you say no to dancing to their tunes, because it helps them maintain all the autonomy in the relationship while you have to seek their permission to be. A partner who genuinely respects you will honor your boundaries and right to personal space. Your choices may disappoint or hurt them but they won’t try to influence you to change them.

Final Thoughts

The signs may not be too problematic if they happen occasionally, or in isolation. But when you observe a recurring pattern in your partner where they show overbearing and manipulative tendencies again and again unapologetically then it must raise your eyebrows. Staying in a toxic relationship knowing the consequences would be a grave mistake and if you’re already in a serious relationship then you may need to see where you stand in the relationship, seeking individual therapy sessions may also help as if someone is not willing to accept their own flaws then you need to ensure your mental peace isn’t disrupted.

Have you ever mistaken someone’s need for control for genuine care or intense love?
