Some people just know how to earn your trust through a smart play of words. You may have met someone who seems just too good to be true, making big promises shortly after meeting you? For a while you start believing he’s the one, but that’s the real catch. Just because someone talks well, doesn’t mean he’s going to deliver on those words. If a man is an inveterate liar, you may start to notice signs of dishonesty through subtle shifts in his communication rather than his dramatic confessions of love for you. The biggest clue lies in the choice of his words when he is under pressure, or the way he tries to avoid eye contact when he talks about a subject he’s trying to hide the truth about.

Here are 13 phrases which appear repeatedly alongside inconsistent behavior, broken promises, or changing stories; you must pay closer attention to them.

“You’re Overthinking It.”

You asked him if he is still into his ex as you saw him liking her recent social media post. Instead of telling you the truth he dismisses your concern saying you are just overthinking stuff, creating problems for yourself. This is a classic maneuver to deflect accountability and gain your trust.

“Trust Me.”

Trust is not built overnight. It is earned through consistent reassuring actions, not embellished words and vehement promises of loyalty. If he uses the phrase “trust me” too often, there is most certainly a history of lies and deceit he tries to compensate for with this repetition.

“I Forgot.”

You can’t blame someone when they are occasionally forgetful, but if a man constantly forgets important dates, promises that mean so much to you, or plans you were so emotionally invested in, call this behavior for what it is: lying. When excuses and explanations replace actions or amends, believe you me, you are dealing with a habitual liar.

“Why Are You Making Such a Big Deal Out of This?”

Not once, not twice, but you caught him repeatedly having a flirty conversation with some woman online. Upon questioning, he starts gaslighting you, telling you it’s not a big deal and you are just friends. He diverts the attention from any serious issue you demanded clarity on to your reaction to avoid confrontation with the truth.

“Nothing Happened.”

You notice he has suddenly become overprotective of his phone, coming home later than usual, and his story changes every time about his whereabouts. When you finally address the shifting behavior instead of responding in an elaborate, calm way to offer clarity, he gets defensive and chooses to stay brief and overtly simple in his response. The phrase itself isn’t the problem, the repeated refusal to engage in a respectful and reasonable discourse is.

“You’re Being Too Sensitive.”

Healthy partners are emotionally safe for each other, they acknowledge each other’s feelings even when they don’t fully agree. Every time you approach your partner with your grievance or hurt you are met with dismissal or even minimization of your pain as he labels you too sensitive. He wants to escape responsibility.

“I Was Going to Tell You.”

When you learn about the truth he had been hiding through another source, and he claims “I was just about to tell you” only after knowing he has been caught, he is often trying to soften the consequences, not acting out of genuine guilt.

“Everyone Does It.”

When you question his actions, for instance, why he is flirting online or hiding his texts with his ex, instead of addressing your valid concerns he invalidates your discomfort by saying “Everyone does it.” He does this to normalize wrong actions, questioning your justified boundaries around them.

“I Don’t Remember Saying That.”

Memory isn’t perfect. But if he constantly tries to make you question your memory through denials or gaslighting, over time you may start believing maybe it was indeed all in your mind. If he says “I never said that” whenever confronted, and his selective memory consistently seems to favor him, then it may raise reasonable questions about his honesty.

“You’re Reading Too Much Into It.”

Another pattern you may observe is that whenever you bring up a legitimate concern he says you are just overanalyzing things. This may be an avoidance tactic to deflect a difficult conversation that may demand honesty and accountability from him.

“You’re the Only One I Care About.”

Frequent words of reassurance like these may feel comforting, but words that do not align with concrete actions sting badly. Pay close attention if he makes big promises and declarations of love but his behavior contradicts them, this is not genuine commitment. True devotion is demonstrated through consistency and transparency, not simply repeated declarations.

“Can We Just Drop It?”

Whenever you try to discuss something that has been keeping you anxious, the conversation ends abruptly as he consciously tries to end the discussion before he has to answer your questions. This phrase, used often, shows his discomfort with accountability.

“I Didn’t Want to Upset You.”

On the surface, this phrase may sound like a thoughtful gesture by a caring partner. But it’s the intention and the timing that make all the difference. If he says this only when the truth he had been withholding from you gets exposed, he is using this to justify his secrecy. Protecting your feelings should never come at the expense of honesty.

Final Thoughts

No phrase, in isolation, is proof of someone’s dishonesty. Occasionally, many of these expressions are used by honest people as well. The real warning sign is the repetition of these reassuring phrases while their actions consistently mismatch their words. If anything, the shifting narratives and inconsistent conduct reveal something deeper: an unwillingness to communicate in a transparent, healthy manner.
