Most men don’t openly gripe about the inequalities they see in their marriages. The reason is simple: they don’t want to start fights. They want to avoid looking ungrateful and petty. But that doesn’t mean they’re blind to these double standards or fully accept them. In fact, the standards fuel a considerable buildup of resentment. This can quietly damage the relationship and, in certain grievous cases, even destroy the marriage. Read on to learn about the common double standards that men quietly notice in their marriages.

He Isn’t Allowed to Vent, but She Absolutely Is

What perplexes most men is that they aren’t allowed to vent or confide in friends or family about their problems, and they can’t express their troubling feelings about the marriage. The irony is that their wives can absolutely do so, and their complaints are seen as healthy and empowering.

His Stress Counts for Less Than Hers

Men usually feel that their stress and problems get downplayed into nothing. They’re expected to be strong, unflinching, and stable even under stress and immense pressure. Their emotional struggles are ignored, while their wives’ are highlighted and emphasized, and their attempts at resolving them are celebrated. Men find this strange and quite unsettling.

His Career Ambitions Draw Criticism While Hers Get Encouragement

A man who wants to expand his business, follow up on career opportunities, or even put in extra shifts at work is seen as apathetic and clueless. On the other hand, a woman who chooses to work and pursue a career is seen as empowering, selfless, and a sign of total commitment to the marriage. Men bring so much to the dynamic, which is why they silently begin to resent this double standard.

His Need for Personal Space Gets Judged, While Hers Is Seen as Fair

When a man wants personal space to pursue his hobbies, relax, hang out with friends, and unwind, his family and friends see it as neglect. A wife who demands personal space and relaxation is seen as justified. Both spouses work hard, and neither one’s need for personal space should be criticized, whether they’re the man or the woman in the marriage.

He’s Called Messy for Not Tidying Up After Himself, While She Isn’t

If she forgets to fold the laundry or leaves her shoes out, it’s no big deal. She’s responsible for the entire workload, right? So who cares about such small things? But heaven forbid a man does it. He’s labeled lazy and incredibly messy.

His Family Comes Second, but Hers Comes First

Men notice when his parents and other relatives on his side don’t get the same attention and priority as her side does. She constantly praises her parents, siblings, and other family members, while his receive only a perfunctory, peripheral level of importance. Her treating his family as optional is completely overlooked, while he’s condemned for doing the same.

His Spending Is Seen as Unnecessary While Hers Isn’t

Whatever money she spends on self-care, extra groceries, or anything else is seen as necessary and justified. But if a man buys something that matters to him or holds sentimental value, it’s seen as incredibly wasteful and worthy of criticism. His expenses are impractical, while hers aren’t.

He Has to Keep His Mood in Check While She Doesn’t

Her mood sets the tone for the house. She can be withdrawn, quiet, moody, and scowl all she wants, and be petulant all the time. Her moods are tolerated, and her tantrums bring little stigma or criticism. Men, on the other hand, are expected to stay calm and regulate their emotions. This isn’t equality, just one-sided tolerance, and men are getting tired of it.

When women criticize their men, the men are expected to accept it all with a stiff upper lip. It’s done to improve his character, right? It’s nothing more than constructive criticism for the betterment of the marriage. That’s the version men are expected to believe, but they notice that it’s one-sided. They can’t extend the same sentiments or criticism toward their wives without appearing unjust, petulant, and apathetic.

His Parenting Efforts Go Unpraised, While Hers Are Celebrated

Men think, and rightly so, that the rating scale they’re judged on is far more punishing and stringent than women’s when it comes to parenting duties. Women are praised for everything they do, while men receive no recognition or appreciation for the part they play in this endeavor.

He Must Ask Before Spending on the Kids, While She Doesn’t

A man has to ask for permission before he can spend on his kids. He has to defer to financial pressures and his wife’s opinions before he can spend on hobbies, clothes, school supplies, and so forth for the kids. She can do whatever she feels like in this regard, and no one will bat an eye.

He’s Expected to Stay Strong While She’s Allowed to Look Tired

Men can’t afford to be seen as weak, tired, or exhausted. It’s not expected of them, so they get no sympathy from anyone. They’re expected to work without complaint about being tired or worn out. A woman can appear tired, complain of exhaustion, and still be met with deep empathy and understanding.

Asking for Help Is Off Limits for Him, Not for Her

A man is expected to simply handle whatever stresses, struggles, or predicaments come his way. He has to keep his problems private and can’t ask others for help when he’s burned out or at risk of emotional exhaustion. A woman’s struggles, no matter how small, can warrant a call for help and support, and everyone will readily give it to her.

His Mistakes Aren’t Forgiven While Hers Are

Her mistakes are tolerated and overlooked. She’s human, after all, and to be human is to be prone to error. A man, on the other hand, gets no such leniency. His mistakes are scrutinized, and he’s condemned for them as though they’re unforgivable. Even the same mistake can bring very different reactions for the wife and the husband.

Double standards don’t destroy a marriage immediately. It takes years of accumulated resentment and bitterness to finally culminate in this regrettable outcome. Healthy marriages can only thrive if both spouses bring respect, understanding, affection, and shared responsibility into the mix.
