You meet someone who seems interesting, spend weeks or months building something you think matters, and then one day… you’re sitting there wondering why everything feels so one-sided. She gives you enough attention to keep you around but never enough to make you feel like you actually belong in her life.
People waste other people’s time all the time (sometimes on purpose, sometimes because they’re confused about what they want). Either way, you end up holding the bag. So here’s what to watch for when you suspect she’s stringing you along.
When You Talk to Her, You Get One-Word Answers
You ask her how her day went, and she says “fine.” You bring up something that happened at work, and she replies with “cool” or “yeah.” Every conversation feels like you’re pulling teeth, and she won’t give you anything real to work with.
She responds fast enough to keep the chat alive but never adds fuel to the fire. You throw out questions, share stories, try to get something going… and she lobs back these tiny, lifeless replies that go nowhere. After a while, you realize you’re the only one actually talking here.
She Never Defines What’s Going On Between You Two
Weeks turn into months, and you still can’t figure out what you are to her. You’ve hinted at it, maybe even asked directly, and she dodges the question every single time. “Let’s see where this goes,” she’ll say, or “I’m not really into labels right now.”
She keeps everything blurry on purpose because committing to an answer means she’d have to commit to you. So she leaves you in this limbo where you’re doing boyfriend things but getting none of the security that comes with it. You can’t plan anything, can’t expect anything, and you definitely can’t call her out when she acts like you’re strangers in public.
You’re Her Emotional Dumpster and That’s It
She calls you when she’s upset about her boss, her family, her friends, her ex… basically anyone and everyone except you. You listen, offer advice, try to help her feel better, and she takes it all in. Then the second she feels fine again? Poof. She’s gone.
You’re her go-to therapist, the guy she runs to when life gets messy. But when you need someone to talk to, when you’ve had a rough day… she’s “busy” or she gives you some half-baked response that makes it clear she’s already checked out. She wants your support without giving any back.
She Talks Over You Constantly
You start to tell a story, and before you finish the first sentence, she’s already jumping in with her own version of something “similar” that happened to her. You try again later, and she interrupts you again (sometimes to change the subject entirely, sometimes to correct some tiny detail that doesn’t even matter).
She treats every conversation like it’s her stage, and you’re supposed to sit there and nod along. Your thoughts, your experiences, your opinions… they don’t register with her. She’ll ask a question and then cut you off halfway through your answer because she’s already decided what she wants to say next.
You Get The Hot-and-Cold Treatment More Often Than Not
One day she’s texting you paragraphs, laughing at your jokes, acting like you’re the only person who exists. The next day? She’s distant, barely responds, and treats you like you did something wrong (even though you didn’t). Then a few days later, she’s back to being warm and affectionate again.
You never know which version of her you’re getting, and it messes with your head. You start overthinking every text, every interaction, trying to figure out what you did to “cause” the switch. You didn’t do anything, though. She’s keeping you off balance so you’ll chase her harder when she pulls away.
She Rarely Matches The Energy You’re Putting Out
You plan dates, send thoughtful messages, remember the little things she mentions in passing… and she shows up with the bare minimum. You put in effort, and she coasts. You try to make her feel special, and she treats it like it’s expected (like you’re supposed to do all this while she sits back and enjoys the ride).
The imbalance becomes obvious after a while. You’re always the one suggesting plans, always the one trying to keep things interesting, always the one making sure the relationship (or whatever this is) doesn’t fall apart. Meanwhile, she’s perfectly comfortable letting you carry all the weight.
She Doesn’t Entertain It When Things Get Serious
You try to have a real conversation about where this is headed, and she shuts it down immediately. She’ll laugh it off, change the subject, or “have to go” right when you bring it up. Anything that requires her to be vulnerable or honest gets deflected before it even starts.
She wants to keep everything light and fun because depth means accountability. The moment you ask for clarity or commitment, she treats you like you’re being “too intense” or “moving too fast” (even if you’ve been seeing each other for months). She’d rather keep you guessing than give you a straight answer.
You’re The Only One Who’s Making an Effort to See Her
You’re the one texting to set up plans. You’re the one driving to her place, rearranging your schedule, making sure you carve out time for her. And what does she do? She says “yeah, maybe” and then bails last minute… or she agrees to hang out but acts like she’s doing you a favor by showing up.
She’ll never suggest meeting up on her own. She’ll never ask what you’re doing this weekend or if you want to grab dinner. If you stopped reaching out entirely, weeks could go by before she even noticed, and even then, she probably wouldn’t care enough to say anything.
You’ll See Her Hanging Out With Other Guys Frequently
Her social media is full of photos with other dudes. She’s at parties, dinners, concerts… always surrounded by guys who are clearly interested in her. And when you ask about it (casually, because you don’t want to seem insecure), she brushes it off with “they’re friends” or “it’s not like that.”
Maybe they are friends. But she also knows exactly what she’s doing by keeping them around and making sure you see it. She wants you to feel replaceable, wants you to worry that someone else might swoop in if you don’t step up your game. It’s a tactic to keep you chasing.
You’ll Know She’s Bored Because That’s The Only Time She’ll Reach Out
She disappears for days, sometimes weeks. Then out of nowhere, late at night or when she’s got nothing else to do, your phone buzzes. “Hey, what are you up to?” She’s interested all of a sudden, wants to talk, acts like you’ve been on her mind this whole time.
But you know better. She’s reaching out because everyone else is busy, or because she’s lonely, or because she wants attention and you’re reliable. The second her calendar fills up again or someone more interesting comes along, she’ll vanish again, and the cycle repeats.
She Rarely Asks Any Questions About You
You could tell her you got a promotion, moved to a new place, had a death in the family… and she’d respond with “oh, that’s nice” before steering the conversation back to herself. She doesn’t ask follow-up questions, doesn’t dig deeper, doesn’t seem curious about your life at all.
She knows basic stuff (your name, where you work, maybe what you like to eat), but that’s it. She’s never asked about your goals, your past, your family, your fears, your dreams. You’re a prop in her story, someone to fill the space when she needs company, but she’s never actually invested in you as a person.
She Never Initiates First Contact
You’re always the one sending the first text. You’re always the one calling. You’re always the one kicking off the conversation, and she responds (sometimes), but she’ll never start one herself. If you decided to test this and stopped reaching out… your phone would stay silent.
She’s comfortable letting you do all the work because she knows you will. She doesn’t have to put in effort because you’ve already shown her that you’ll keep trying regardless. And as long as you keep initiating, she’ll keep responding (enough to keep you hooked, but never enough to make you feel secure).
Nobody in Her Life Knows You Exist
You’ve been seeing her for months, and she’s never introduced you to her friends. She’s never mentioned you to her family. When you’re out together and she runs into someone she knows, she either doesn’t introduce you at all or refers to you as “a friend” (even though you’re clearly more than that… or at least you thought you were).
She keeps you hidden because acknowledging you publicly would mean admitting this is real. And she’s not ready to do that. Or worse, she’s already decided you’re temporary, so why bother bringing you into her actual life? You’re in this weird pocket where you exist to her privately but disappear the second anyone else is around.
She Won’t Mind Flirting Around With Other Dudes
You’re right there, and she’s laughing at another guy’s jokes, touching his arm, leaning in close when she talks to him. She’ll flirt openly, sometimes right in front of you, and when you bring it up later, she acts like you’re overreacting. “I’m a friendly person,” she’ll say, or “you’re being insecure.”
She knows what she’s doing. She knows it bothers you. And she does it anyway because keeping you a little off balance, a little worried, a little jealous… that’s how she maintains control. She wants you to see that she has options, that you’re not the only one paying attention to her.
The Best You Can Get is a “Maybe” From Her
You ask if she wants to meet up this weekend, and she says “maybe.” You suggest grabbing dinner, and she says “we’ll see.” You try to make plans more than a day in advance, and she refuses to commit because “she doesn’t know what she’ll be doing yet.”
Everything’s tentative with her. She won’t lock anything down, won’t give you a clear yes or no, won’t plan ahead. She keeps her options open so she can bail if something better comes along, and you’re left waiting around, hoping she’ll actually follow through this time (even though deep down, you know she probably won’t).
