Many people in seemingly happy relationships may often be seen with extremely low self-confidence, heightened self-doubt and a deeply negative self-talk loop. They tell you how incompetent they are. How irrational they can get. And how all the problems are somehow their doing. These are the people who got trapped in a relationship with a gaslighter and manipulator who destroyed their sense of self-worth and inculcated deep insecurity in their mind about their own reality. This is just how a gaslighter operates: they make their victim look like the unstable one while they get away with the emotional manipulation. Here are 15 ways gaslighters distort reality and make you feel crazy.

Weaponized Calmness

They are unusually calm and composed even in the face of a heated exchange and somehow this calm is their biggest weapon to take control of the narrative. They intentionally provoke you then sit back and watch you go mad at them for not reacting. This helps them create a false impression of you that you are indeed the unstable or hysterical one in the relationship.

Pity-Party Reframing

When you call them out for hurtful behavior, they start self-deprecating remarks, like “I know I am a bad human, you shouldn’t have married me.” Or “Maybe you wanted someone better than me”. This forces you to forget the issue under discussion and start comforting them and reassuring your unconditional love for them. Slowly, they tactfully make you abandon all your boundaries using pity-party reframing.

The Selective Memory Eraser

They aren’t forgetful; they simply erase the memories that favor you and remember just the parts that work against you. They would outright deny having made certain promises, or if you confront them with a detail from a past conversation they make you check your chats to see when they said that. They are too strategic in their insults. They deliberately make promises, demeaning remarks or jokes, in private so there’s no proof to support your claim later. This method helps them make you question your sanity and memory.

Disarming Selective Concern

Many people who have been victims of gaslighting can corroborate the fact that these people use empathy against you. When you tell them you’re not okay, they will tell you may need antidepressants as you may be going paranoid. This takes the blame for ruining your mental health off them and dumps it on you.

Micro-Rewriting of History

One key feature of gaslighters is that they would twist certain parts of the story, not the whole of it, to manipulate you into believing that questioning their version of events may mean you don’t trust them or are misinterpreting their intentions.

Passive-Aggressive “Joking”

They are skilled at taking passive-aggressive digs at you with a smile and composure you feel so unarmed to defend yourself. It takes a moment before you even realise you have been mocked, or hurt.

The Phantom Consensus Tactic

They drag some unknown reference in their argument to defend their point of view and you are left speechless as you don’t know how to respond. You are left with no option but to agree with them. Like “Even my friend was saying your partner is so sensitive”.

Deflecting Through Fake Logic

One hallmark sign of covert gaslighters is that they hide behind logic to get their way with things. They will try to offer a logical explanation to invalidate your emotional experience. This is a classic tactic to invalidate your concerns.

Calculated Subject Pivoting

The minute they feel they are losing an argument and may have to take responsibility for their actions they start to divert the subject, bring up your past mistakes to leave you defenseless and isolated. They would do anything to deflect accountability.

The Counter-Interrogation Trap

If you try to address the elephant in the room they simply propose a counterargument. They respond to your simple justified questions with allegations of a lack of trust in them. Their defensiveness keeps a healthy conversation far from reality.

Over-Explaining to Exhaust You

If you indeed do detect their double standards, besides getting defensive they will tell you a long-winded monologue with irrelevant and exhausting details to emotionally drain you. This is a technique to make you too tired to pursue the discussion further.

Strategic Partial Admissions

They do admit making some mistakes but only the harmless ones, this maintains a façade of transparency without having to accept their major wrongdoings.

Minimizing Emotional Damage

The worst part is that they may try to hide behind the hurtful actions or major betrayals by downplaying the impact they had on your shared connection. They call you too sensitive or dramatic for expressing your grief over the emotional harm they inflicted upon you.

Shutting Down To Stop Communication

Another way they try to sabotage problem solving is by shutting down or saying they just don’t want to engage in any argument with you to avert a difficult conversation. With this approach they close doors to healthy communication and resentment follows.

The “I Can’t Win” Victim Shift

When all else fails to work on you they use the victim card. They end the discussion by playing the victim saying they just can’t win any argument from you so they just give up their right to defend themselves. This is a win for them as they claim the moral high ground with this move.

Final Thoughts

Gaslighting is rarely loud but extremely toxic in nature. Manipulators thrive on gaslighting their victim as it helps them escape responsibility, deflect accountability and blame their partner for everything that goes wrong. They instill self-doubt, anxiety, uncertainty and helplessness in their victim. Before you succumb to their manipulation, recognizing these signs could help you reclaim your power and sanity.
