Couples marry with the vision of a lifetime together. But somewhere along the way, they can forget what brought them together in the first place: the love, the shared views on life, the shared goals, and maybe the children they brought into the world. Both partners may evolve, sometimes to the detriment of their emotional connection, after a decline in romance. Sometimes wives take on different roles than they had at the beginning, or change in ways that pull the husband away from her. Here are 13 common reasons men consider walking away after hitting their 50s.

A Sudden Burst of Self-Awareness

Men often discover their true selves around the 50 mark, and that new way of looking at life changes how they see their marriage. Sometimes, in his mind, he blames the marriage for his unfinished dreams.

Health Concerns

As men approach 50, they realize more of their life is behind them than ahead of them, and they start to feel their time is borrowed. They may let hidden or previously stifled desires take over and even let go of a long relationship, driven by whims and a sense of the end looming.

Emotional Intimacy Fades

With time, monotony sets in, buried under layers of responsibility. The kids are grown, the debts are paid, and life has stability. But somewhere in that long journey together, the couple may have lost each other. They’re like roommates sharing a roof, with the emotional connection missing. That feeling can make a man want to separate from his wife.

A Craving for Reinvention

Years of playing the traditional roles of a great father, a responsible provider, and a husband may have turned into a tediously familiar routine for a man, and now he wants to reinvent his life. He may want to live free of responsibilities and on his own terms.

Not every couple manages to have it all together. Despite their earnest efforts, they may not have reached the financial stability they once dreamed of. Living under financial constraints, or with their wives’ different spending habits, may have been the battleground for too many disagreements and too much resentment. At 50, a husband can crumble under that financial friction and pressure and may quit the marriage.

The Kids Have Moved Out

All these years, both wife and husband had a shared purpose: raising and feeding the kids. By the time the man is 50, the kids have left home for careers and marriage. That creates a void and exposes the cracks in the husband-wife relationship, which used to be filled with the busyness of, and conversations about, the kids.

Different Plans for the Future

The couple may have pictured a completely different version of life after their 40s. The husband may want to enjoy his time, travel, and pursue the hobbies he always wanted to. The wife may want quiet time at home that offers predictability and familiarity, or the other way around. That difference in future plans can lead them to part ways.

Feeling Unappreciated

Women often complain about emotionally unavailable and unappreciative husbands, but the opposite is true too. Just like women want appreciation and validation for their contributions, men shouldn’t be taken for granted for their provider role. Men who earn all their lives, do their fatherly and husbandly duties, and never get any appreciation may grow resentful and ultimately leave their dissatisfied spouse.

Looking for a New Identity

As a man ages, the roles that once defined him, the provider, the career man, the reliable figure of the family, start to fade. The kids are independent, and the wife may have her own business. He may start feeling irrelevant and look outside for a renewed sense of identity.

The “What If” Feeling

He may never have felt a mental compatibility with his wife, but to keep the household together or for the sake of the kids, he kept postponing the idea of separating. Now, at 50, with the kids moving out and time running short, he wants to take a second chance at love and life.

A Decline in Intimacy

As a man ages, so does his wife. As she goes through menopause and her libido drops, the man may take her lack of desire as rejection. Nothing hurts a man more than feeling unwanted by his wife, and he may eventually decide to end that pain by ending the marriage.

Resentment Finally Boils Over

When an estranged couple stays in a marriage for years just for the kids’ sake, the resentment and conflict keep brewing. Then one day, when they no longer have an excuse to stay together, they decide to part ways.

Less Social Pressure

Divorces later in life aren’t as stigmatized as early-marriage divorces. When many men see their peers going their separate ways from their spouses, they may feel less pressure to stay in an unhappy marriage. That leads a lot of men to divorce around 50.

The Bottom Line

Divorce at any age, whether in your 20s or your 50s, is equally painful, whatever the reasons: self-awareness, a fantasy of a fresh start, kids moving out, or deep-seated resentment. As a couple, it’s always wise to keep an eye on the small things throughout your marital journey that may later contribute to your marriage’s collapse. Real love only happens once, so protect it while you still have the chance.
