A marriage rarely breaks down overnight, there may be an accumulation of unresolved hurts and emotional scars that were never addressed or acknowledged when the aggrieved party tried to bring it up for a discussion. Over time, a seemingly small incident may serve as the last nail in the coffin for the already wounded partner and the woman may end up wondering was this minor inconvenience even proportionate to the major reaction her partner gave, by walking away without a clear explanation?

Here are 13 double standards that directly or indirectly shake the foundations of a marriage if you don’t pay attention to them in time.

Expecting Total Financial Provision While Keeping Her Income Private

Women may want equality when it comes to making their lives convenient. But when the time comes to contribute equally to the finances then they assume being a provider is the man’s job. Many women create secrecy and possessiveness around their own income and spendings,  which lead to mistrust and eventually a collapse of the institute of marriage.

Demanding Personal Free Time While Micro-Managing His Hobbies

She values her own autonomy, friendships, hobbies, career, goals, etc. but when her husband pursues his interests, stays out late for a hangout with his best friends occasionally or goes out for a football match she criticizes him and constantly questions his decisions. She makes an attempt to sabotage his freedom saying the family deserves his time and energy more than his personal hobbies. Meanwhile she always needs a self-approved break from home.

Holding Grudges for Past Errors While Expecting Instant Grace

When a wife fails to forgive a man for his past mistakes even when he has amended his ways and sought apologies sincerely, this mental scorekeeping drives a wedge between them both. Without her even realizing, her grudges push her man away. Resentment builds when a partner is unwilling to let bygones be bygones.

Asking for Help at Home But Gatekeeping How Tasks Are Done

She may demand equal contribution in household chores, but then she decides when and how a task needs to be done. She wants him to run chores at terms set by her. This limited authority damages the connection as a husband may start to feel deeply frustrated from being micromanaged all the time.

Being Warm and Charming to Friends But Distant at Home

She is extraordinarily charming and chirpy outside home in social gatherings and even with strangers they meet as a couple, but the moment she steps home she is back to her grumpy, nagging self. This makes a man feel unwanted and humiliated. As a result, he starts to emotionally detach himself to save himself from emotional pain.

Labeling His Outlets “Childish” While Defending Her Personal Spending

She keeps a track of what he buys, where and how he spends his own money while she doesn’t even think twice before buying an extravagantly expensive designer bag, just because she couldn’t resist it. This imbalance may take a huge toll on a husband, and he may start to wonder if he is even free to make his own small decisions? Or will he have to justify his expenditure indefinitely?

The Emotional Venting Trap (The Subtle Trap)

This one may not seem that significant to most women as they feel only women have the need to vent out their emotions. Since the majority of men aren’t too expressive, she may fail to sense he has emotional needs, too. She wants to be heard, but dismisses, or worse invalidates his feelings. Slowly he starts to feel an emotional disconnect from his wife and when it gets too overwhelming he parts ways

Prioritizing Her Family’s Needs While Dismissing His Relatives

A selfish wife often has a very biased attitude towards who she lets into her shared social circle, she is extremely overextending and warm towards her own side of the family and expects him to do the same. While she makes minimal effort to make his side of the family feel welcomed or may even feel annoyed when they meet her. This sows seeds of discord as the man may feel disrespected, and that he has no worth in her life.

Expecting Him to Stay Fit While Neglecting Her Own Effort

She continuously remarks and pressures her husband to pay attention to his diet, physique, and health while she herself makes no effort to look and dress her best. This attitude kills mutual attraction.

Expecting Him to Mind-Read While Refusing Direct Communication

She wants him to anticipate her needs in advance. First she doesn’t clearly express what’s on her mind and then she gets upset and stirs an emotional unrest in the house when he fails to notice her subtle emotional cues. This unrealistic expectation may exhaust a man as the marriage gets older, as he is done with guessing games.

Treating Her Bad Days as Excuses and His Fatigue as a Flaw

Sometimes, citing her PMS, sometimes her work stress etc for her bad mood and disrespectful behaviors, becomes a norm for her. But endlessly pinning the blame on circumstances rather than taking responsibility for the way her hurtful behaviors damage her husband’s self-esteem destroys the emotional intimacy.

Demanding Strict Phone Privacy While Snooping Through His Devices

All her apps are password protected, her laptop and phone lock screen passwords are unknown to the husband but she continuously suspects his character. She snoops into his phone every  chance she gets. A lack of respect for his privacy while making a big deal about her own may make a man feel he is not trustworthy enough for her even after all this time.

Final Thoughts

A lasting healthy marriage has two partners that trust, respect and love each other beyond any doubt. Everything is two-sided and intentional. They show equal contribution and devotion towards each other. This makes him feel at a disadvantage from being with an overbearing partner who thrives on double standards. Addressing these small but impactful habits may help ensure both partners feel equally valued, respected, heard and prioritized.
