When you start dating you may feel too enamored with someone to see them for who they are beneath the surface. The butterflies, the anxiety and the nervousness may cloud your judgment and you may overlook very obvious red flag signs in your potential partner. But here are 10 red flag signs you must be particularly wary about when dating someone, as ignoring them at present could herald a dark future.

They Ignore Your Boundaries

Look at how they perceive your boundaries. If they repeatedly cross your boundaries, pressure you into something, and take your personal space lightly, they may never honor your limits even in future.

They Rush the Relationship

Genuine connection takes time to develop. When a partner forces you towards physical intimacy or marriage it must raise your eyebrows, as beneath the impatience may be deeper issues like control, immaturity, lust, or manipulation.

All Their Exes Are “Crazy”

Pay attention to how they mention their exes. If they consistently believe the problem was with their exes and they are the ultimate victims in all the past relationships that ended, this reveals a person with a lack of accountability and self-reflection.

They Hate Hearing “No”

See how they navigate a no. If your “no” angers them, annoys them, or they resort to manipulation or verbal abuse to get their way with things, then they may lack the emotional maturity to regulate normal conflicts that may keep surfacing in healthy relationships.

Their Words Never Match Their Actions

They may make huge claims but never follow through with their words. A person whose words are not consistent with their actions may be warning you why you must not trust them for a long-term relationship.

They Are Constantly Checking on You

Care and concern are great but a problematic partner starts to show obsessive or controlling tendencies gradually. They may ask you to share your location, share all your whereabouts 24/7 and you may start to feel emotionally drained.

They Make You Feel Guilty for Having a Life

They want to be the center of your attention. The moment you express interest elsewhere like a new hobby, your friendships, etc, they get visibly upset. This is an attempt to induce guilt in you for having a life beyond them. If your autonomy and independence trigger someone, then know it, dreaming a lifetime with them will be a bad decision.

They Treat Other People Disrespectfully

A lot is revealed about the way a person treats complete strangers. When you see them talking disrespectfully to restaurant staff or salespersons or any person in general they may possess entitled behaviors that might dismantle your peace in the long run.

Every Argument Becomes Your Fault

You are always the reason for all the fights you have according to them. This blame game and a lack of self-accountability are clear red flags, as you may be dealing with someone who lacks the emotional intelligence to see their own flaws and unhealthy patterns.

You Constantly Feel Anxious Around Them

True love feels calm and serene. If someone’s presence feels intimidating, keeps you anxious or walking on eggshells, or wondering where you stand, you need to address these emotions immediately. Dismiss them now and you might regret it for life.

Look for Patterns, Not One Mistake

To err is human but notice the patterns if your partner keeps committing the same hurtful mistakes or behaviors then it’s not just a one-off event, rather it may reveal who they truly are. State your concern once and see if they change after you communicate your grievance or stay unbothered.

Don’t Confuse Chemistry With Compatibility

You may feel instant romantic chemistry with them on the very first date but a physical spark does not imply a potential for deep emotional intimacy. In fact the lack of the latter may eventually cause a loss of physical intimacy if you enter a long-term relationship with someone you don’t feel emotionally connected to.

Give Yourself Permission to Walk Away

If you are not valued, appreciated, seen or heard by your partner you are allowed to choose yourself over an unfulfilling relationship. One date alone is not enough to determine if this is how they are but if they seem distracted in repeated interactions with you then you may need to re-evaluate your relationship.

Final Thoughts

A red flag is not always one behavior, one statement or the way they behave on one particular day, rather an accumulation of different unhealthy patterns that don’t go away even when you question them is what constitutes a true red flag. If every date with them leaves you emotionally drained and with a feeling of unease and discomfort then maybe walking away while you still have time is the healthiest choice you can make for your own peace. Repeated disrespect, control, dishonesty, blame games, or emotional immaturity may be taken seriously to prevent problems in the long run.
