Someone new sits across from you, and the conversation feels easy enough. They laugh at your jokes, ask follow-up questions, and seem interested in what you’re saying. But somewhere between the appetizer and dessert, something feels off. Maybe they interrupt you when you’re trying to explain something that matters. Or they pull out their phone again while you’re mid-story. Little things start piling up, and by the time the check comes, you’re already planning your escape route.
First dates reveal more than people think. Sure, everyone puts on their best behavior for a few hours, but cracks show up anyway. Pay attention to these red flags early, and you’ll save yourself weeks (or months) of wasted time.
1. Their Whole Personality Changes When Other People Show Up
They’re sweet and attentive when it’s the two of you at the table. Then someone they know walks into the restaurant, and suddenly they’re louder, animated in ways you haven’t seen all night. They start telling stories with exaggerated hand gestures, laughing at things that weren’t funny two minutes ago. You sit there wondering if you’ve been on a date with the wrong version of this person the entire time.
Or maybe a friend of theirs walks by, and they completely switch up. The person who was leaning in and listening to you thirty seconds ago now acts like you’re invisible. If they can’t stay the same person for two hours, imagine what six months looks like.
2. They Cut You Off Mid-Sentence When You’re Talking Seriously
You’re trying to tell them something that actually matters to you (maybe a story about your family, or why you left your last job), and they interrupt with some random anecdote about their life. Or worse, they finish your sentences for you like they already know where you’re headed.
They do it once, maybe twice, and you brush it off. “They’re probably excited,” you tell yourself. But then it keeps happening. Every time you try to share something real, they steer it back to themselves or gloss over what you said entirely. People who genuinely care about getting to know you let you finish your thoughts. People who only care about talking at you? Well, they show you that on date one.
3. They Always Want to Be Praised for Doing The Bare Minimum
They showed up on time, and their immediate response is, “See? Told you I’d be here at seven.” Okay, congratulations on meeting the absolute lowest bar. They act like splitting the bill fairly is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Or they mention three times that they “remembered” to ask about your day.
You’ll notice this when they fish for compliments over things that should go without saying. “I’m a pretty good listener, right?” (said after checking their phone twice). “Bet you don’t meet guys/girls who actually plan dates anymore, huh?” Meanwhile, you’re doing all the same things and expecting nothing in return.
4. You Catch Them Making Up Pointless Little Lies
They tell you they’re “super into golf,” but don’t even know what a birdie means. Or they mention they read all the time, but when you ask what book they’re currently reading, they scramble and name something from high school English class.
Someone who lies about small things will absolutely lie about bigger things later. If they’ll make up a fake hobby to impress you over drinks, what happens when real issues come up? Pay attention when their stories don’t line up, or when they backtrack on something they said twenty minutes ago. Liars trip over their own words eventually. You decide if you want to stick around for that.
5. They Turn Every Single Thing Into a Contest
You mention you ran a 5K last month, and suddenly they’re telling you about the half-marathon they did (twice, actually). You talk about a stressful project at work, and they one-up you with their own nightmare that was “way worse.” Every story you tell gets matched with a bigger, better, more impressive version from their life.
Dates should feel like conversations, where both people share and listen. But with this person, it feels like you’re competing for airtime. They can’t let you have a moment where you’re interesting or accomplished. They need to reclaim the spotlight immediately. If everything’s a competition on date one, imagine how exhausting year one will be.
6. They Can’t Go Five Minutes Without Scrolling Through Their Phone
You’re talking about your favorite travel destination, and their eyes flick down to their screen. “Sorry, go on,” they say, but you can see them typing something. Then a notification pops up, and they check it again. “My friend’s having a thing later,” they explain, like that makes it okay to split their attention between you and a group chat.
People who want to be there with you will actually be there. They’ll silence their phone, flip it face-down, and engage with what you’re saying. Someone who keeps checking their screen every few minutes shows you exactly how much they value your time, which is somewhere below “moderately interesting Instagram story.”
7. Conversations Sound Dull and Lifeless
You ask them questions, and they give you one-word answers. “How was your weekend?” “Good.” “What do you do for fun?” “Stuff.” You feel like you’re conducting an interview instead of having a conversation, pulling teeth to get anything resembling a real response. Meanwhile, they’re staring at you like you’re the boring one.
When someone’s interested, they elaborate. They give you details, ask follow-ups, build on what you’ve said. But when they’re checked out? Everything feels flat. You leave the date exhausted because you did all the work to keep things moving, and they contributed absolutely nothing. Two people need to show up for this to work. One person can’t carry the whole thing alone.
8. They Don’t Entertain Any Serious Questions
You try to ask something real (like what they’re looking for in a relationship, or what their goals are for the next year) and they deflect with a joke. Or they give you a vague non-answer like “I’m keeping my options open” or “I’m going with the flow.” Every time you steer toward something deeper, they redirect to surface-level topics.
Some people avoid serious conversations because they’re genuinely unsure about what they want. Fair enough. But others dodge these questions because they know their answer won’t match what you’re looking for, and they’d rather string you along than be honest. If they can’t have one real conversation on a first date, they’re saving the truth for never.
9. Talking to Them Drains Your Energy
Two hours pass, and you feel like you’ve run a marathon. Your face hurts from forcing smiles, your brain’s exhausted from trying to find topics they’ll actually engage with, and you’re counting down the minutes until you can leave. They didn’t do anything overtly terrible, but being around them feels like work.
Good dates leave you feeling energized, even if you’re an introvert who needs to recharge afterward. Bad dates leave you depleted because you’ve been managing their mood, carrying the conversation, or navigating their weird passive-aggressive comments all night. If spending time with someone feels like a chore before you’ve even made it official, walk away now.
10. Money Keeps Coming Up in Conversations Where It Doesn’t Belong
They mention how much their car cost. Then they drop the price of their rent in a neighborhood you didn’t ask about. They casually reference their salary, their bonus, their investment portfolio, all within the first hour. Or they go the opposite direction and complain about being broke, hinting that you should cover more than your share.
People who are secure with their finances don’t need to broadcast them on a first date. Someone who keeps steering the conversation toward what they earn (or spend, or own) is either trying to impress you with numbers or fishing to see what you can offer. Either way, it’s a preview of how transactional the relationship will feel.
11. They Don’t Hold Up Their End of the Bargain
You agree to meet at seven, and they show up at seven-thirty with no apology. Or you split the check, and they conveniently “forget” to tip their half. Little agreements get broken without acknowledgment, like it’s no big deal that they didn’t follow through on what they said they’d do.
These small broken promises stack up fast. If they can’t keep their word about meeting on time or covering their share, how will they handle bigger commitments? People show you who they are through their actions. Believe them when they demonstrate that their words mean nothing.
12. They Act Like Spending Time With You Is a Huge Sacrifice
They sigh when you suggest grabbing dessert. “I guess I can stay a little longer…” They mention how busy they are, how many other things they had to move around to make this date happen. Everything they say drips with the implication that being here with you is this massive inconvenience they’re graciously enduring.
When someone wants to spend time with you, they make it clear. They’re present, engaged, and happy to extend the date if things are going well. But someone who acts like they’re doing you a favor by showing up? They’re telling you that your company ranks somewhere below their other priorities, and that won’t change after date two.
13. You Meet Their Friends, And You Don’t Like Them
They bring you to a bar where their friends are hanging out (weird move for a first date, but okay). Within ten minutes, you realize their crew is… a lot. They’re rude, immature, or unpleasant to be around. Your date laughs along with jokes that make you uncomfortable, and you start wondering what kind of person chooses these people as their inner circle.
Your date’s friends reflect who they are and what they tolerate. If their closest people are exhausting, cruel, or disrespectful, your date co-signs that behavior by keeping them around. You can overlook a lot of things, but someone’s friend group tells you what they find acceptable, and if you can’t stand the people they love, that’s a problem.
14. Their Behavior is Wildly Inconsistent
They’re sweet and engaged for the first thirty minutes, then cold and distracted for the next thirty. You can’t figure out what changed or what you did wrong (hint: probably nothing). They laugh at your joke one moment, then act annoyed when you make another one five minutes later. Being around them feels like trying to navigate a minefield where the rules keep changing.
When someone’s all over the place on a first date (hot, then cold, then friendly, then dismissive) you’ll spend the entire relationship trying to figure out which version of them you’re getting that day. Save yourself the guesswork and move on.
15. They Cancel on Your Plans Last Minute
You’ve confirmed the date twice. You’ve picked out an outfit, cleared your schedule, and maybe even turned down other plans. Then, an hour before you’re supposed to meet, they text: “Something came up, can we reschedule?” No real explanation, no genuine apology. They offer a flimsy excuse that sounds like they forgot or found something better to do.
People who respect your time don’t cancel last minute unless it’s a real emergency. Someone who bails casually shows you that your plans together rank pretty low on their priority list. If they’ll do it once, they’ll do it again, and you’ll spend the whole relationship wondering if they’ll actually show up.
