You’ve had the conversation. Maybe more than once. He nods, says he understands, and promises he’ll work on it. You want to believe him because loving someone means giving them chances, right? But weeks pass and… nothing.

He does the same thing again. You bring it up again. He apologizes again. And somewhere in the back of your mind, you start wondering if he actually plans to change or if he’s become really good at making you think he will.

Every Argument Ends Exactly Where It Started

You lay everything out. You explain how you feel, what bothers you, why it matters. He listens (or at least he looks like he’s listening), and when you finish, he says something like “okay, I get it.” You walk away thinking maybe this time he heard you.

Fast forward two weeks. You’re having the exact same argument. Word for word. He acts surprised, like you never mentioned it before. You feel like you’re stuck in some kind of loop where nothing you say actually sticks. He’ll nod today and forget tomorrow, and you’re left wondering if he ever took you seriously in the first place.

He Shows Up the Moment He Needs Something

Your phone stays silent for days. No texts, no calls, no “how was your day?” Then suddenly ping. He needs a favor. Can you pick something up? Can you help him figure out that thing with his car? Can you cover for him because he double-booked himself?

And here’s the kicker: he’ll act like everything’s fine between you two. Like the fact that he only reaches out when he wants something doesn’t say everything about where you actually stand. You’re not his partner in those moments… you’re his go-to problem solver.

You Second-Guess What You Saw with Your Own Eyes

He tells you one thing happened. You know something else happened because you were right there. But he spins it so confidently that you start doubting yourself. “You’re remembering it wrong,” he says. “That’s not what I meant.” “You’re being too sensitive.”

Eventually, you stop trusting your own mind. You replay conversations in your head trying to figure out if you misunderstood, if you overreacted, if maybe he’s right and you really did blow things out of proportion. Meanwhile, he gets to rewrite history however he wants, and you’re too confused to call him out on it.

He Laughs Off Anything That Matters to You

You try to tell him something that’s been eating at you. Something real. And he… chuckles. Makes a joke. Changes the subject. Acts like you’re being dramatic for even bringing it up.

When someone dismisses what matters to you, they’re telling you (without actually saying it) that your feelings don’t rank high enough to take seriously. He’d rather brush past the uncomfortable stuff than sit with you through it. And every time he does that, you learn to keep more to yourself because what’s the point of sharing if he’s gonna treat it like background noise?

He Reaches Out the Second You Stop Trying

You pull back. You stop texting first, stop initiating plans, stop putting in all the effort. And for a while… crickets. Radio silence. You think, “Okay, so that confirms it.”

Then boom. He’s suddenly all over your phone. “Hey, what’s up?” “We should hang out.” “Why’ve you been so distant lately?” He only notices you when you’re not there. The moment you stop chasing, he starts paying attention but only long enough to reel you back in.

Spending Time with Him Leaves You Completely Exhausted

You love him. You want to spend time with him. But after a few hours together, you feel drained. Like someone pulled the plug on your energy and left you running on fumes.

That’s what happens when someone takes more than they give. Every conversation becomes work. Every plan requires you to manage his mood, tiptoe around his reactions, or brace yourself for whatever version of him shows up that day. Loving someone shouldn’t leave you needing a recovery period afterward.

You Have to Fight Just to Get Him to Listen

You say something once. Twice. Three times. He hears you the way people hear elevator music. It’s playing, but nobody’s actually listening. So you raise your voice. You get frustrated. And suddenly you’re the problem for “overreacting.”

But here’s the thing he won’t admit: you wouldn’t have to yell if he listened the first time. You escalate because that’s the only way he pays attention. And instead of owning that, he makes it about your delivery, never about the fact that he ignored you until you had no choice but to get loud.

He Forgets What You Told Him Yesterday

You mentioned something important. Maybe it was about your day, your feelings, or something you needed from him. He said “mm-hmm” at the time. The next day? Blank stare. “You never told me that.”

When someone repeatedly “forgets” what you say, they’re showing you how much space you take up in their head. You could tell him the same thing five times, and he’d still act like it’s brand new information. Meanwhile, you remember every little detail he ever mentioned because… well, that’s what people do when they actually care.

He’ll Explain Why It Happened But Never Say He’s Sorry

He messed up. You tell him how it made you feel. And instead of apologizing, he launches into a full explanation. “I did it because…” “You have to understand…” “The reason that happened was…”

Excuses aren’t apologies. When someone would rather justify their behavior than acknowledge they hurt you, they’re protecting their ego, not your feelings. A real apology doesn’t come with footnotes and a list of reasons why you should’ve seen it coming.

One Day He’s All In, the Next Day He’s Gone

Monday, he’s texting you nonstop. Making plans. Acting like you’re the only person who exists. By Thursday? You can’t get him to respond to a single message. He’s hot, then cold, then hot again, and you never know which version you’re gonna get.

Living like that keeps you off balance. You can’t relax because you’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop. And he benefits from that uncertainty because it keeps you working twice as hard to hold onto the “good” days.

You’re Who He Calls When Everyone Else Is Busy

His friends bail. His family’s unavailable. His first choice fell through. Now he calls you. “Want to grab dinner?” “You free tonight?” And you know you know you weren’t the first person he asked.

Being someone’s backup plan feels exactly how it sounds. You’re the safety net, the fallback option, the person he knows will probably say yes because you always do. And the worst part? You keep answering because some version of him still feels better than none at all.

Your Plans Don’t Even Come Up in Conversations

He makes decisions about his weekend, his schedule, his life, and doesn’t think to mention you until after everything’s locked in. “Oh, by the way, I’m going out of town.” “I already told them I’d help them move.” “I signed up for that thing Saturday.”

You’re supposed to be a team. But teammates check in with each other before committing to stuff. When he leaves you out of his planning, he’s telling you exactly where you fit in his priorities. Hint: you don’t.

He Knows Exactly Which Buttons to Push

You tell him what bothers you. What gets under your skin. What makes you feel small. And later during an argument, when he’s backed into a corner, he uses all of it against you. He goes straight for the stuff he knows will hurt most.

Someone who loves you doesn’t weaponize your vulnerabilities. They don’t turn what you trusted them with into ammunition. But he does. And every time he does it, you learn to guard yourself a little more, even from the person you’re supposed to feel safe with.

You Don’t Recognize Yourself Anymore

You used to speak up. You used to know what you wanted. You used to have boundaries that actually meant something. Now? You bend, you compromise, you let things slide because it’s easier than dealing with the fallout.

He didn’t change you overnight. He did it slowly. One dismissed feeling at a time, one ignored boundary at a time, until you looked in the mirror and barely recognized the person staring back. And the scariest part? You can’t remember exactly when it happened.

You’re Afraid of What Happens If You Walk Away

You think about leaving. You imagine what life would look like without him. And then… the fear kicks in. What if you’re overreacting? What if he does change and you gave up too soon? What if nobody else ever wants you the way he (supposedly) does?

That fear keeps you locked in place. And he knows it. He might not say it out loud, but he knows you’re too scared to leave, so he doesn’t have to actually change. Why would he? You’re still there.
