Three months in and you’re still wondering where you stand. She laughs at your jokes, replies to your texts… but something feels off. You can’t pinpoint exactly what it is, but your gut keeps whispering that she’s treating you like a placeholder (someone to fill the hours until someone better walks through the door).
Maybe she cancels plans at the last second, or maybe she goes cold for days and then acts like nothing happened. You’ve caught yourself making excuses for her behavior, convincing yourself that she’s “busy” or “going through something.” But deep down, you know the truth. When someone really cares, they make it obvious. The signs are there if you know where to look, so let’s break down what really matters.
1. She Doesn’t Respect Your Time
You clear your entire Saturday because she said she wanted to hang out. Then 2 PM rolls around and she texts: “running late, maybe 5?” By 6:30, she’s still “on the way.” You sit there refreshing your phone while your friends blow up the group chat about the game you’re missing.
When someone values you, they show up when they say they will (or at least give you a heads-up before you’ve already turned down three other plans). She treats your schedule like a rough draft she can edit whenever she feels like it. You rearrange everything for her… and she can’t even bother to give you a straight answer about when (or if) she’s actually coming.
2. She Always Tends to Downplay What You Have Going On
You mention that big presentation at work and she goes, “Oh, that’s cool I guess.” Then she launches into a fifteen-minute story about her coworker’s drama. Your promotion? She changes the subject before you finish the sentence. That hobby you’ve spent years perfecting? “Cute.”
She makes everything you care about feel small. When you try to share what matters to you, she either glazes over or finds a way to one-up you with something from her own life. You start keeping things to yourself because what’s the point? She’s already made it clear: your wins don’t register on her radar.
3. She’ll Pencil You In Unless Something Better Shows Up
Plans with you come with an asterisk. “Yeah, let’s do dinner Tuesday… unless Jess wants to go to that thing.” You’ve learned to wait for the confirmation text that may or may not come. Half the time, she bails an hour before because “something came up” (and that something is always more important than you).
You’re the backup plan, the safety net when her real options fall through. She keeps you around for when she’s bored or lonely, but the second her friends call or that guy she’s been eyeing texts back, you disappear from her calendar. You’ve memorized the pattern by now: excited texts, vague plans, last-minute cancellation, repeat.
4. She Decides What You Get to Know About Her and When
Ask her about her day and you get “fine” or “busy.” Meanwhile, you’ve told her about your family, your fears, that embarrassing thing that happened in high school… and she’s given you nothing. She keeps you at arm’s length while acting like you’re supposed to be grateful for whatever scraps of information she tosses your way.
You don’t know where she works (not really), you’ve never met her friends, and she dodges every question about her past like you’re conducting an interrogation. She wants to know everything about you but treats her own life like classified information. That’s not mystery. That’s someone who refuses to let you in because you’re temporary.
5. She Loves to Stir the Pot Constantly
Every conversation somehow turns into an argument you didn’t see coming. You mention you’re tired and she snaps, “Oh, so I’m boring you now?” She twists your words, picks fights out of thin air, and acts offended by things you never said. You spend more time defending yourself than actually enjoying her company.
She thrives on the chaos. The moment things feel peaceful, she finds something to poke at (your friends, your choices, that offhand comment you made three days ago). You’re exhausted from walking on eggshells, constantly bracing for the next blowup over something that shouldn’t even matter.
6. She Doesn’t Have a Filter and Loves to Tear You Down
“You’re kind of bad at that, huh?” She laughs after you miss a shot playing pool. Then she points out your shirt doesn’t fit right… in front of her friends. Later, she’ll tell you you’re too sensitive when you don’t find it funny. But the digs keep coming, dressed up as “honesty” or “teasing.”
She takes shots at your insecurities and acts like you’re the problem for caring. Your hairline, your salary, that thing you’re self-conscious about? Fair game in her world. Real affection doesn’t feel like a roast session where you’re always the punchline.
7. She Only Leans In When You Start Walking Away
You pull back for a few days and suddenly she’s all over you. Paragraphs instead of one-word replies, plans she actually keeps, compliments she’s never given before. She senses you slipping away and panics… but the second you’re hooked again, she goes back to being distant.
This cycle repeats every few weeks. You create space, she reels you back in, then returns to treating you like an afterthought. She doesn’t want you. She wants to know she could have you. The attention only flows when she thinks she’s losing control.
8. Everything You Do Becomes a Test You Never Signed Up For
You offer to pick her up and she says, “If you really wanted to, you’d already be on the way.” You buy her flowers and she goes, “Hmm, interesting choice…” with a tone that makes it clear you failed. Every gesture gets graded on a rubric she’s never shared with you.
She sets traps to see how you’ll react, then punishes you for getting it wrong. You’re supposed to read her mind, anticipate her needs, and somehow know the right answer to questions she’s never asked. Meanwhile, she offers nothing in return except more hoops to jump through.
9. She Loves to Make You Guess on What Her Next Move Is
Monday she’s all in, talking about weekend plans and texting you goodnight. Wednesday she’s a ghost (won’t answer calls, leaves you on read for hours). Friday she’s back like nothing happened. You never know which version of her you’re getting… and she likes it that way.
She keeps you off-balance on purpose. The inconsistency makes you work harder, chase more, and tolerate behavior you’d never accept from someone who actually cared. She’s playing a game where the rules change daily and you’re always three steps behind.
10. She Constantly Tests Your Patience
She shows up late (again), forgets plans you made last week, and “accidentally” leaves you waiting while she finishes a phone call that stretches into half an hour. Then she watches your face to see if you’ll say something. When you do, she acts shocked that you’re upset.
She pushes boundaries to see how much you’ll take. Every ignored text, every broken promise, every time she puts you last… she’s measuring your reaction. Will you call her out or will you smile and pretend it’s fine? She’s collecting data on exactly how much disrespect you’ll swallow.
11. She Acts Like You Should Thank Her for Showing Up
“You’re lucky I came out tonight” slips into conversation like it’s a favor. She mentions how busy she is, how many other things she could be doing, how you should appreciate that she chose you over her other options (which she makes sure to mention).
She treats her presence like a gift you didn’t earn. You’re supposed to grovel with gratitude whenever she makes time for you, even though relationships aren’t supposed to feel like charity. She wants credit for doing the bare minimum while you bend over backward to keep her interested.
12. Every Nice Thing You Say Bounces Right Off Her Head
You tell her she looks beautiful and she rolls her eyes. “Sure.” You compliment something she did and she dismisses it with “whatever” or “you’re lying.” No matter what you say, she deflects, argues, or treats it like you’re running a scam.
She can’t accept anything genuine from you because she’s decided you’re not worth believing. Your words mean nothing to her. She’s built a wall so thick that even your most honest moments can’t get through… and she doesn’t care enough to let them.
13. She Moves the Goalposts After You’ve Done Something for Her
You do exactly what she asked (pick up her favorite takeout, remember that thing she mentioned last week, show up early like she wanted). Then she goes, “Well, I actually meant…” or “I thought you’d know to…” and suddenly what you did isn’t enough.
She changes her expectations after you’ve already met them. You’ll never win because the target keeps moving. She keeps you scrambling, trying to prove yourself, while she sits back and critiques your every effort like a disappointed judge who’s already decided you’re not good enough.
14. She Shares Your Private Texts With Her Group Chat
That vulnerable thing you told her at 2 AM? Her friends saw screenshots before sunrise. They know about your ex, your work stress, that embarrassing story you thought was between you two. She treats your private moments like content for her entertainment committee.
She doesn’t protect what you share with her. You’re not a person she respects. You’re material for her group chat. They laugh at your messages, dissect your typos, and weigh in on whether you’re “worth keeping around.” You confided in her… and she turned it into a spectator sport.
15. She Mocks You for Being Too Available
You answer her calls and suddenly you’re “desperate.” You make time for her and she jokes that you “have no life.” You show interest and she tells her friends you’re “obsessed.” She punishes you for doing exactly what people in healthy relationships do (showing up and giving a damn).
She wants you available but resents you for it. You can’t win: pull back and she complains you’re distant, lean in and she mocks you for caring. She’s looking for reasons to dismiss you, and your willingness to be there gives her all the ammunition she needs.
