Men are usually considered to be driven by lust, admiration, peace, and respect. Women, on the other hand, are usually thought to want attention, security, romance, and emotional intimacy. Reality is not that simple, though. A man can be loved and still feel unwanted. Sometimes, what one partner thinks the other person wants isn’t even accurate. The shocking fact? Many relationship issues aren’t caused by a lack of love, but by a failure to give one another what they would actually like to receive.  Here are 14 things that men and women might get wrong about each other’s needs.

He May Want Respect More Than He Wants To Be Impressed

A man doesn’t have to be liked by his partner for everything he does. However, if she feels she can trust his judgment, effort, character, and decisions, it can mean a lot. Praise can momentarily make someone feel good, but true respect is what can make them feel secure in the relationship.

He May Want To Feel Wanted, Not Just Loved

Loving and being desired are not the same thing. A man can be aware that his partner cares about him while still wondering whether she is genuinely interested in him. Physical intimacy is just an aspect of a relationship but many men wish to be genuinely desired by their partner.

Praise Isn’t The Only Way To Show Appreciation

It’s not always necessary to remind him that he is amazing. Sometimes, it’s simply  acknowledging the little things that he handles without being asked, like the help he provides at home, the problems he solves, or the sacrifices he makes without telling anyone. A lack of appreciation can make it difficult to feel valued when he is constantly feeling invisible in a relationship.

He May Not Want You To Fix Every Problem

If a man is having trouble, his partner might feel compelled to fix it. However, sometimes he isn’t looking for a solution. He might just want someone by his side while he works things out. It’s not the same thing to support a man as it is to micromanage his problems.

He May Care About Peace More Than Winning

Most men  don’t want women to agree with everything they say. They know disagreements are a healthy part of a healthy relationship. However, if every conflict becomes a judgment of their character, intelligence, or commitment that emotionally drains him. A man doesn’t need a conflict-free relationship. He wants to feel emotionally safe to disagree respectfully.

He May Want To Feel That His Effort Actually Matters

Think about doing things for someone all the time and never getting any recognition. Eventually, even the kindest of hearts get tired and stop trying. Most men aren’t necessarily looking for applause. The mere acceptance that their efforts mean something to their partner, can make them feel loved and respected.

He May Want To Feel Micromanaged

Independence can sometimes create emotional distance. Many men feel good about making their partner’s life better. When a woman gives him the snub that she doesn’t need his help he quietly becomes emotionally distant.

He May Need Space But Not Distance

Alone time is one of the simplest things to get wrong in a relationship. If a man wants an evening to himself, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s losing interest. He might need time for hobbies, friends, exercise, work, or simply to switch off his brain. Healthy space doesn’t necessarily weaken closeness. Sometimes, it can make it feel better.

He May Be More Sensitive To Criticism Than He Lets On

Some men seem unaffected by criticism, but that doesn’t mean they don’t take it in. If criticism becomes the primary language of a relationship, he might eventually hear “I want us to improve” and begin hearing “I’m never good enough.” There’s a big difference between calmly discussing a behavior and attacking someone’s identity.

He May Want Loyalty When Life Isn’t Going Well

When everything is going well, it’s easy to feel good about a relationship. The more difficult question is what happens when his career falters, his self-confidence wanes, his finances become tight, or life simply doesn’t go the way they had planned. It is during those times, it can be far more comforting to know that his partner is still on his side over romantic gestures.

He May Want Affection Without Having To Ask For It

Men are sometimes stereotyped as being less emotionally affectionate. That doesn’t mean they don’t need affection. A random hug, a goodbye kiss on the forehead, sitting closer, or holding hands can communicate something that words sometimes can’t: “I still want you close.”

He May Want To Be Accepted Without Being Treated Like A Project

There are always things that can be improved. But there comes a point when encouragement starts feeling like renovation. When a man feels that his personality, appearance, career, habits, friends, or ambitions are constantly being “fixed” by his partner, he may begin wondering whether she actually likes him as he is.

He May Want His Partner To Believe In Him

A partner doesn’t have to agree with every decision a man makes. But knowing that someone believes in him and he can succeed when he’s in self-doubt, that can be incredibly motivating. Sometimes the best thing a partner can give isn’t advice. It’s simply: “I know you can do this.”

This one gets overlooked by many. A man may share his home, routine, children, finances, and years of history with you, but none of those things automatically answer the emotional question: “If we had to choose each other all over again, would you still choose me?”. Feeling chosen keeps a man emotionally attached to his partner forever.

Final Thoughts

One of the biggest mistakes couples make isn’t necessarily misunderstanding men or women. It’s assuming they already know what their partner needs. Men aren’t all the same. Women aren’t either. And that’s the point. It’s not really about discovering what all men want. It’s about being curious enough about the person you’re actually with and learning what he needs from the relationship. Many times, it could be something as simple as the feeling that you see them, appreciate them, desire them, and still choose them.
